- Jerry Smith was likely asked for his opinion and he gave it. I feel he was being honest and it's very possible that he was correct. What counts is, despite his opinion, he and the rest of the CLPD took the threat seriously and every measure necessary to ensure the safety of our children and our town. I can't imagine the chaos that would have ensued had the school corp sent out an Alert Now message to all of the parents. Especially with the news unfolding in CT, people would have acted like maniacs racing to the school to scoop up their kids. The kids would have been freaked out and the police would have had to divert their attention to directing traffic instead of keeping an eye out for Von Meyer behind the school. Jerry Smith has invested countless hours in our school system as the DARE instructor and just as much time if not more providing security. He loves our kids just as much as we do and I feel confident that he did a great job ensuring their safety.
