  1. There are actually 7 library districts in Lake County. They are Crown Point, East Chicago, Gary, Hammond, Lake County, Lowell and Whiting. Networking between the libraries would be great. Merging the libraries would be extremely expensive.

  2. The Lake County Public Library is not a county library. Over 30 years ago the state of Indiana came to the cities & towns in NW Indiana & asked them if they wanted to get together and share a library. Some said yes and some said no. The towns that said no chose to keep their own library. The towns that decided to work together and have one library representing them unfortunately chose the name Lake "County" Public Library. There is no " county" library, school district, police or fire department either. Every library in NW Indiana has their own library board & budget. It is important that our government representatives and the media talk with the director & library board of the Hammond Public Library, and not the mayor, to learn more about the history, policy and budget facts of the Hamond Public Library and what their needs are to sustain their library in the future. Perhaps the Hammond Public Library board and director have a plan to manage their library and the mayor is not listening to their advice. They should be listened to.They have the knowledge and experience to keep the library going.

  3. I am a Highland resident & a booklover. My family & I cannot afford the tax increase that would happen if the Lake County & the Hammond Public Library merge. It will be very costly to merge staff, library materials, computers, utilities, insurance and building maintenance. Did you know that both libraries use different on-line catalogs to keep track of library materials? Did you know that the Hammond Public Library has over $7 million dollars of debt that would be the responsibility of 13 other towns if the merger passes? Did you know that the Lake County Public Library has non-union staff and that the Hammond Public Library is unionized? The homeowners & property owners of the13 towns of the Lake County Public Library cannot afford the additional money it would take to pay for the merger, the Hammond Library debt and bringing the Hammond Public Library up to the standards of the Lake County Public Library. Please contact your state representatives & tell them, that you cannot financilly afford this potential merger.
