  1. I’ve noticed how some like to say that addicts are nothing but bad news. Addicts are damaged goods, make poor choices, they’re ignorant, they come from trash and broken homes – they are a waste.

These are all nice to say if you want to make yourself feel better. Ask questions. For example, who in the world wakes up and thinks – “I’m going to be a drug addict!”?

There’s always some underlying reason that people turn to drugs, alcohol or any other addiction for that matter. The user does not want to deal with life as it is and is seeking escape or fulfillment – anything to take the pain away, be able to sleep through the night or even feel happy for a moment. They are so lost and don’t need to be beaten any further.

Until the addict decides to deal with life and the problems they face they will keep coping with what they know works. Don’t blame the addict – treat the addict. An addict isn’t just going to quit unless they realize there is no other viable option. They will continue to relapse until they realize a positive result that would make relapse absolutely pointless. For an addict it is just so much easier to just get high – that’s all that’s expected of you – go on, give in – you’re already beaten. You’re damaged goods and have no hope of recovery or having a normal life again. You're going to end up dead anyway so it's ok to have a good time.

I was a very unhappy, lonely 24-year-old young man with high anxiety and just didn’t know what to do. I had moved out of the area for a job and didn’t know anyone. I saw a doctor. I was prescribed Prozac and Xanax. I had never been high before in my life. No drug in the world would end up helping me but the recovery from the addiction certainly did. My addiction took my job, my savings and pushed my family ties just about as far as they could go.

These people aren’t being rehabilitated; they’re being discarded like junk because they are too weak to resist and no one really cares in many cases. I’m fortunate that my family cared about me enough to stick by me through this – my mother in particular. Thankfully she knew something was wrong and really got into my business – she wasn’t going to lose me if she could help it. I wouldn’t be alive today if they hadn’t been as involved in my life.

I’ll be clean for two years on 03/18/2013 and don't ever care to touch the stuff again. I’m gainfully employed but still doing cleanup. Recovering from addiction is a difficult road even when you have a support system and people who care about you. If it were easy everyone would do it now wouldn't they?
