  1. Have you considered that the stopped train may have been experiancing mechanical problems, that the crew reported this to their dispatcher who then coordinated with the local authorities to assist in clearing traffic through the grade crossing? Mechanical failures can and do happen, and not always in the most convenient of locations. When it affects a grade crossing like that we immediately confer with the local authorities. As for the other train, did you happen to notice the way it approached the crossing or the severely reduced speed at which it crossed? There are very extensive and thorough federal rules governing train movements that both the engineer operating the controls and the conductor in charge of the train must comply. Failure to do so can result in a federal decert--you lose your license. Safety is the first thing on everyone's mind.

  2. Nice people can commit crimes too. As the saying goes: if you did the crime, you can do the time.

  3. Again as previously said, it sounds like the problem is local (pun intended). My union has been there when I had questions, it has defended me when unfairly judged, it fought to keep us employed at least through Christmas by looking for other understaffed areas when the economy tanked in 08. The men and women in my union work a split shift so they can be there in the office when needed, and for the pay rate nowhere near what people assume. Our vice chairman has been there when I've called his personal cell on off days because he cares about what's going on. I'm not going to compare hoodies, etc as our company does that (and more) mostly. If Illinois ever goes RTW or if that National RTW bill is passed, I will gladly support my union. Union membership is like a gym membership. Dues are necessary to operate, and just like a gym if you do not show up to meetings and do not participate, you will not get stronger. If you don't like what is going on in your union, change it. If you don't like the way your chairman, president, etc are running the union, vote for someone else. Have you even talked about your feelings about your local with anyone else there yet?

  4. If believing that there are good unions, believing in the good things they've brought us (union and non-union alike), and believing that I belong to a good one makes me a union thug then I am a union thug. Perhaps this will be like other derogatory slurs used over the last 400+ years that were once used to vilify, demoralize, and discredit people undeserving of such bias, that they were taken in defiance and used to self identify.

  5. Then there is a problem...wait for it: specific to your situation and not unions as a whole. I work for the largest US class 1 railroad, incompetence is quickly indentified and dealt with here. No one wants to work with someone that lazy as their complacency creates a safety hazard. Not something I want when dealing with 400,000lb+ equipment.

  6. Either you do not belong to a union and you are just regurgitating anti-union rhetoric or you may belong but you do not understand how they work. Those supposed "inflated wages" are part of an agreememt, a labor contract. Both sides have wants and needs, however both sides have to agree to the terms. After that the union is there to ensure the company holds up their end of the deal. The same as the company expects us to hold up our end of the deal. Just like any...standard...contract. That's it! There is no big bad union forcing a company to its knees making them agree to ridiculous demands. That is propaganda simple and plain. So before complaining about those "inflated wages", are you sure you are not just underpaid? Are you aware skilled labor pays more because it is "skilled" labor? Before it is asked, I do belong to a union: UTU #528 and proud.

  7. Its sad but its been a long time coming. My family has known DoDo for a long time, well before she ever bought the bar back when it was Marty's. Once Southtown closed and the riffraff started pouring in the regulars slowly left--customers and employees. I miss those days when it was a good neighborhood hang out. I can't blame it all on Southtown patrons as a lot of us in our group moved up and out of Hammond.

  8. Old habits die hard it seems. From the news going around the neighborhood he just got his GPS bracelet off in December from his previous arrest. Hopefully when he goes before the judge on that one (Feb 14th iirc) he puts him away where he belongs for a very long time. I will say he is very luckyhe was quiet, one of the houses he broke into is a good friend of ours. He fully believes in the 2nd amendment and I have no doubt he wouldn't hesitate to put a slug in his head if he thought his or his daughters life was in danger.
