  1. There was a reason why PUC and IUN got rid of their associate degree and remedial programs--because they were not doing a good job with them and the federal government wasn't going to keep providing student loan money to fund virtually no progress toward an education. That's why the community college system was beefed-up as a way to better address the needs of students who couldn't even progress to an associate degree program due to extensive educational deficits. So many students at these 2 colleges were taking numerous classes and accruing no credit toward any kind of degree; then dropping out in frustration, while still being burdened with loan debt that they couldn't repay due to extremely poor job prospects. It was like a shell game. There's lots of blame to go around; starting with the poor primary and secondary schooling offered in many communities here; leaving students seeking associate degrees and even vocational certificates woefully lacking in the basics like math, reading comprehension, research and writing skills, etc.

  2. How do you know that his birth mother was "irresponsible"? Often, such mental illnesses are inherited; and she might not have been able to cope herself. She might have made the best decision for her child; if she didn't have the emotional capacity to care for him properly and give him a good life. Sounds as if he got great adoptive parents; who fought ferociously to provide him with the help needed so that he can have a good life. Real love is dong what is best for your loved ones--even if it means that you can't be in their lives due to your own "issues". I've known people with these kinds of illnesses who were terrified to have children; because they knew that their own parents had such illnesses and they didn't want to pass such burdens onto a child. I'm betting that the adoptive parents here are glad that someone gave birth to a child that they came to love and cherish.

  3. I hope "R" is OK. Just the other day, he said he wanted to move; and I can understand why he felt such urgency.

  4. I met Ms. Williams just once--when she performed a CAT scan on me at St. Catherine's hospital--and she impressed me so much that I never forgot her kindness, good humor and skill. She treated me as a consummate professional; and went out of her way to make me feel at ease--even figuring out that I was claustrophobic and was fearful of going into the enclosed scan machine. She told me jokes and made me laugh; then constantly reassured me that I could make it through the procedure without panicking.

I had some tests done at the hospital after her death and mentioned her to the other technicians: they were all still distraught at her senseless death. Her co-workers really loved her--you could see the pain of her loss in their eyes; hear it in their voices as they talked about her. She touched a lot of people; even if she didn't know it. I hope knowing how much she was valued by many will be of some comfort to her loved ones.

  6. I often disagreed with what he had to say; but am so glad that we live in a nation where he had the right to say it and be protected while doing so. So few really appreciate the art of editorial column writing; so it is good to know that this writer's work was appreciated and admired by so many readers. I always wondered that if Kiesling wrote a book about what he had learned of Lake County political shenanigans; just what kind of read that would be--probably both laugh-out-loud and head-shaking madness. I'll miss his "way with words"; including those that infuriated me and those that made me laugh and smile in recognition of the truth of the matter.

  7. There were also "jitneys" in Chicago's black communities--they would take you to major intersections rather than to a specific address. As a kid, I rode jitneys all over the South side of Chicago--I think it cost a quarter or 50 cents and you could catch one at the bus stop at 63rd and King Dr. and be dropped off on the corner of 47th St.. So this was not a phenomena confined to Pittsburgh...

  8. Be very careful of those "non-moving violations"--the city has jacked up the cost of such tickets but are still issuing tickets with the old rates on them. When you arrive at the clerk's office to pay these tickets; you will be in for a big shock! Seems that some neighborhoods with bad parking situations are being targeted--with tickets being issued after midnight until about 5 am! It's useless to appeal to your councilperson or the mayor's office--they'll ignore you. A real underhanded way to increase revenue, IMO--especially in areas with no painted parking spaces where residents have parked for decades.

  9. I attended this performance and it was so good and heartwarming. After the skit, the performers served a tasty meal to the audience. The entire experience was so enjoyable! I would highly-recommend that people check out the performances of this terrific little theatre group--and the free refreshments are top-notch, too!
