  1. This and so many other "nonprofits" make a mockery of the tax laws. What is charitable about cars planes houses and Harleys? Hard working families contribute to the city coffers-time for high living preachers to do the same.

  2. If you really want to help target at-risk children who need additional assistance, RAISE THE AGE THAT YOU CAN PROVIDE SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES UNDER THE DEVELOPMENTAL DELAY LABEL TO AT LEAST SEVEN YEARS OLD. Currently the label ceases at six years old creating a large gap in the schools ability to commit staff at this critical age. Six year old children have A LOT OF DEVELOPMENTAL DELAYS THAT REQUIRE SUPPLIMENTAL INSTRUCTON.

  3. Gee let's starve education, mental health care and family services to help businesses locate here. Guess what...the lack of quality community resources will keep them away. Put the money back into our most valuable assets... "human capitol."

  4. The shameful part of having to provide healthcare benefits is the profitable companies who will make their employees part time so that they don't have to pay. Shame on them. I hope someone researches this so we can stop frequenting big businesses who shirk their responsibilities.

  5. Cut the budget for schools by millions and require them to keep creating new programs. Education is not free and this remediation is just another unfunded hoop that schools are required to jump through. Enough...put the money back into schools and than talk about new programs. Education in Indiana is starting to look like an episode of the Survivor show.

  6. Great job Crisis Center! You have always kept your focus on keeping kids safe. Communities should support any expansion opportunities that will increase your services. You are the beacon of hope for so many children.

  7. Alternative house is one of the few consistent, effective interventions for troubled children in northwest Indiana. Children and families are in crisis more than ever, without viable resources for short or long term stabilization. Indiana has a surplus of money because critical services have been cut. We should be ashamed. Perhaps the new governor will see the need for change...we can only hope.

  8. The DCS committee also needs to look into the "rules" that govern home-schooling in Indiana. Although some families clearly do very well with educating their children, there is very little oversight over the process. I have reported cases of suspected abuse or neglect only to have the parent pull the child from school to avoid further scrutiny. The parent "registers" with the state and the child completely disappears from the view of caring adults. Parents don't need to prove that the child is really being educated. It is a very serious problem.

Example: Christian Choate, a boy who authorities claim lived locked in a cage and died from savage abuse... "One of the reasons his absence wasn't noticed was that his stepmother, Kimberly Kubina, took him out of school, saying that he was being home-schooled. The extent of that homeschooling was revealed in some letters found by DCS. When other children were out playing, Kubina would give Christian paper and tell him to write." -Huffington Post 6/26/11

Also, if the parent does bring the child back to school, months or years later, the school has the problem of trying to remediate a child who is grade levels behind their peers in terms of skills. Schools can't put a label on a child in order to receive long term, intensive special education assistance when the deficits clearly stem from a lack of exposure to the core curriculum.
