- There is always a lot of confusion between the Little Cal and the Grand Cal. The Little Cal generally speaking has a lot less legacy contamination as compared to the Grand Cal which has issues with the sediment primarily. There is a multi-million dollar cleanup effort that is taking place right now to dredge the Grand Cal and hopefully make it usuable in the future by the public. I've worked and played in the Little Cal many times with little worry about pollution hurting me. I'd avoid the chances of drinking it obviously because of the chance of e-coli, but I wouldn't be too worried about falling in. The Grand Cal is a different story. Hopefully in the near future, this river will be clean enough to use without worry.
