  1. Vicki Urbanik is not only qualified, she is one of the most ethical people I have ever met. She won't play games and she won't play politics. Her hiring is perhaps the most intelligent and foresighted decision that the County Council has made in many years.

  2. I don't think anyone is saying they should be on the streets. But I do think it's a reasonable question to ask WHY the county is only reimbursed $56 a day per FEDERAL inmate held at the jail. These are not people arrested or prosecuted in Porter County. They are people detained by the US Marshall's Service. And, Lain has failed to tell anyone what it ACTUALLY costs to house these federal detainees. If the actual cost is more than $56 a day, then it's time for the US Marshall's service to pony up. Why should Porter County's tax money be used to subsidize the federal government?

  3. LIFERISK is Mr. Biggs. Yep, that's right...he comments on his own comments under an alias. Go figure, huh?

  4. Valpo Girl....don't worry. LIFERISK...aka Jim Biggs, thinks that I am John Evans. His ego is just so big he can't accept that fact that normal folks like you and I would disagree with him. He's so paranoid that I think he's beginning to see Evans and Blaney in his sleep.

  5. The commissioners offered $2.5 million in CEDIT money per year for four years to balance the budget, address jail staffing needs AND provide a 24 CENT an hour raise to employees and GRAHAM VOTED AGAINST IT along with Biggs, Polarek and Rivas. SHE TURNED DOWN THE CEDIT MONEY.

You had the chance, Sylvia and the No J's. But YOU SAID NO, and now you are whining about the consequences of your actions.

  6. Oh, and let's not forget that the County Auditor Bob Wichslinski, when campaigning two years ago, slammed his opponent for not doing the job. So, after Wichslinski wins, he turns around and gives his vanquished opponent a contract for tens of thousand so of dollars...more than the guy was making when he was the Auditor. More sleaze.

  7. Well, Cork...it gets even worse. I forgot to mention that this is the same auditor who tried to give thousands of homestead exemption scofflaws amnesty earlier this year! He took credit for it in another one of Bob K's "well researched" articles. Then, when it was pointed out to him that it WAS ILLEGAL to do, he turned around and blamed one of the contractors that he pays the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Then, he gives a $90,000 contract to former probation department head who abruptly left the probation department under a cloud.

  8. Hidden goodies, Happy? You mean paying equal pay for equal work? That would be the same type of "goodies" that Biggs has voted FOR with every other county department that has made the request.

  9. Here we go again, Jim Biggs. You pass a budget that fails to address medical staffing at the jail, overcrowding at the jail, and long term funding for E911. You pass a budget that raids the county's general fund reserve, fails to provide sufficient money to cover anticipated health insurance claims, FICA payments, and required retirement fund contributions. You pass a budget that denies employees a TWENTY FOUR CENTS AN HOUR pay raise...the first they would have had in several years.

And your answer, Mr. Biggs? Attack county employees. That is your answer every time. The raises for the specified employees were done as part as a several year effort to bring salaries in line for all county employees. In other words, to equalize salaries for employees who do the same amount of work. This is a process that Biggs has supported for EVERY OTHER DEPARTMENT. But when he is backed in a corner over his insane budget, he tries to divert attention by singling out hard working county employees.

Kasarda didn't uncover anything. Biggs has him on speed dial, and will print anything that Biggs feeds him.

Biggs and County Auditor Wichslinski are the masterminds behind this fiasco. The same auditor that is sitting on a 1.5 million dollar slush fund that he uses to pay HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS to contractors to do his job, that he uses to purchase dozens of IPADs for employees and contractors. The same auditor that "mistakenly" included a cut to veterans services, "mistakenly" slashed the County Coroner's budget, and "mistakenly" under calculated miscellaneous revenue projections.

Biggs and Wichlinski are the masterminds behind spending TENS OF THOUSANDS of dollars for an independent financial advisor to assist in developing the County budget, and when the INDEPENDENT financial advisor's report didn't agree with Biggs and Wichslinki, they just ignored the advice.

And SHAME ON SYLVIA GRAHAM. Sylvia, you jumped in bed with these people as a blatant political move to try and garner votes. Well, Sylvia, you probably forgot to remember what happened in the primary....the voters SHUNNED Biggs and his partner in lunacy, Jim Polarek. They got their clocks cleaned...and you just asked for the same.

  10. Yeah, Kasarda always leaves out those pesky little details like the Commissioners CANNOT MAKE THE FUNDING COMMITMENT PERMANENT UNDER STATE LAW. They made the $2.5 million commitment for four years...the longest term they are legally able to do...yet Sylvia and the No J's rejected it.
