Not all parents in these areas receive assistance! Geesh!

I take it that no one that has commented on this article has a child/children that are enrolled in the Gary Public School system. I have 3 children that attend Charter School of the Dunes and I have no complaints. This school has brought up my children test scores and helped my Autistic son become verbal. They offer Sylvan for 36 hours and tutoring in the morning and evening. Despite what the letter grade says, you have to look at the fact that they are recieving a lot of kids that are not anywhere near their grade level and there is no testing to enroll so for some they are starting from scratch. Befor enrolling my kids here, I paid for a Catholic school education that was horrible. I hope for the sake of the kids this school stays open.

I applaud this parent for not signing her son's IEP but she has to advocate for her son and go to the highest school, official (if she has to) to be heard. I guess I was lucky! My son is Autistic and attends the Charter School of the Dunes in Gary. He gets speech therapy twice a week and one on one from a Certified ABA aid daily. I refuse to let him be place with the other 2nd graders as he would not learn anything and his teacher would not be able to teach the other students. When we started working with him he was non verbal and now 3 years later he can talk in complete sentences.
