  1. KFW has to pay the new department heads she brought in double and triple to work in Gary. She has promoted a culture of volunteerism for Gary residents but her "New Day Team" members aren't willing to work for a salary this city can afford. That's not "Karen About Gary", it's "Karen About Karen".
How long will it take for KFW to pay off her campaign promises to these carpetbaggers?

  2. Another big talk no bucks guy trying to flim-flam Gary. It's sad that Gary attracts these types like flies to honey. Because of the city's desperate situation, these "consultants" can pitch an impossible dream scheme, skim some money off the top and go on their way.

Muhammad is probably also behind the brilliant "Cash for Trash" scheme to turn Gary into the Midwest's largest garbage receptacle. That's a global economic plan only in Third World countries.

We can do better than that.

  3. I live in Gary and I've seen and talked to a street sweeping driver that was sweeping our street in Gary last year. He said his company was working for the Storm Water Management District and that they had swept storm sewer areas of the city the previous year as well.

  4. Wow. C. Davis Nelsen, II, is worried about 100 hrs. spent by his staff on government regulatory responses. HIs company probably spends more than that on the annual golf outing and political contributions to pro-business cronies. This country prides itself on its democracy, a "government of the people, by the people, for the people.." not some oligarchy committed to protecting the profits of businesses. All those regulations were put in place to address abuses by businesses, usually egregious, of working peoples rights, environmental protection, and honest financial management.

  5. Industry improvements should be congratulated but tons of air and water contaminants continue to be discharged by U.S. Steel and other steel mills into NW Indiana's environment affecting the health of residents and the ecosystem. There seems to be a flurry of PR touting U.S. Steel contributions to communities such as Gary and Portage since the most recent EPA air violations suit against U.S. Steel Gary Works was publicized by local media.
Cleaning up and restoring the natural environment is great but let's see some contributions to local health improvement initiatives such as childhood asthma.

  6. Why does today's print edition of The Times front page banner headline shout about the stress of "Van Til workers" while the on-line edition headline references the anxiety of "Lake County government"? It looks like The Times is trying to build a "headline" case against Van Til before the Grand Jury even meets.
Anyone going before a Grand Jury or appearing as a witness should be discussing their appearance with an attorney. That's not news.
August 13, 2012 10:34 am on August is high-anxiety month for Lake County government
  7. I believe that as part of the Marquette Plan, I read that Buffington Harbor was supposed to be developed as an entertainment destination with hotel and convention space including some residential to be developed by the Casino operator, not the City of Gary. The "green space" was only a small part of the plan to allow for public access to the lakefront. I can understand changing the plan if the Casino is moving and the clean up costs are too high, but let's not rewrite history to mask what appears to be a very large change in direction to re-industrialize the lakefront.
Hopefully the original Marquette Plan directive to have a "buffer zone" and public access to the lakefront will not be lost with this new development.
