  2. Seriously? Juvenile detention has nothing to do with school - it's incarceration for kids. Did you even read the article? Here it describe what house arrest and home detention are:

    "House arrest is typically assigned to young people after they are arrested and before they go to court. Home detention is an alternative to incarceration after a young person has been found guilty."

  3. What else were the juveniles charged with? Consumption of alcohol is a status offense and you can't detain a juvenile on that charge alone.

  5. Oh, give me a break. The Carson's in Hammond is not in an unsafe area. Yes, the Wal-Mart nearby attracts some "less than desirable" customers, but calling it "Little Beirut" is a huge exaggeration.

  7. You do realize you have to maintain a certain GPA in high school (3.0) and in college (2.0) in order to receive the College Bound scholarship? It's not just given out to every student whose parents own a home in Hammond. You do have to earn it. Many of my high school classmates and I are College Bound recipients, and we have graduated in four years with GPAs significantly higher than a 2.0.

    I also want to point out that there are many people who don't fall into a low enough income bracket in order to receive federal assistance (other than loans). Scholarships like this help reduce their debt.

    Finally - the mayor's daughter attends Ball State (located in Indiana!).
