- April is a beautiful very young woman. Her original sentence of four years seems very harsh on the basis of what an apparently mentally disabled 17 year old young man said when she was 16. I would like to hear her side of it and wonder if she had an attorney representing her. She served a year, and now she faces more years in prison for cutting off the ankle monitor. What she needed was counseling and some community service time. Prison time is approximately $50,000 a year and should only be for those who are so violent they are a danger to themselves or others for only as long as it takes them to change. Better to spend the money on helping her, not harming her. They should be more lenient with young people because their brains are still developing and they have not mentally matured until they are around 25 years old.

- I think the town officials owe this woman a home to live in since they failed to record the land purchase, but charged rent for the land they owned and leased to Mrs. Pittman. Mr. Pullins had to know there was a home on this land and that it was not a vacant lot. He could very easily have rung the doorbell and asked to be reimbursed with interest for having bought the parcel at a tax sale. I'm sure Mrs. Pittman would gladly have paid him $43 plus 18% interest to keep her home. Does he have any proof of ever having sent a letter each of three years to the owner of the property as required by law that the owner was duly notified before he could apply for the title? I hope he shows some compassion and puts himself in her situation and does what is ethically correct.

- It's very sad what has happened to this family. When politicians leave office, all the money in their campaign chest becomes their property to spend as they wish. Congress voted this into law a long time ago. Jesse is guilty of withdrawing money prematurely before he retired from politics. He probably thought he could repay the loan he gave himself before he quit. The article says he will have to repay the government, which makes no sense because it was his money. As soon as he quit politics, the money was entirely his property. Wouldn't it have been better for him to pay a penalty for the early withdrawal, repay the amount borrowed, and stop making this a media circus? He has medical problems, is bi-polar, and all the stress affected his decisions. For years he and his wife represented their community well. I just think this is much to do about nothing and motivated by politics.

- Why didn't the cashier stop ringing up items and call the police, or call the store manager to call the police? Is making money more important than customer safety? It must be the policy of this store to ignore any criminal behavior in the store, except for shop lifting. Several years ago I was verbally attacked by a line cutter at Jewel/Osco who screamed insults at the top of lungs for over five minutes and the cashier kept ringing up items pretending she was deaf. Maybe their legal department has instructed them to be cowards in protecting people.

- This is a wonderful rescue story and I am so happy for the mare and her foal, alive because someone with a big heart and means chose to save her. I would like nwitimes to feature animal rescue articles every day, because they lift the spirit and bring happiness and also because they encourage others to reach out save animal lives if they are able, or at least contribute to those who do.

- I want to know why Ms. Beasley was ordered to return the rescued pit bull family to a very dangerous situation? I think it is reasonable that she asked for the order in writing so if they died or were injured she would not be held accountable and fired as a result. Why was there a refusal to put it in writing? No warrant was necessary to rescue the dogs from a life threatening situation that the owners had failed to correct. Who is the attorney who gave erroneous advice and has he issued an apology and correction? How are these dogs doing now? Or does anyone in charge at animal control care? It seems very unfair and sad that an extraordinary and dedicated and compassionate employee would lose their job because of an attorney's error. She is the kind of person you want working with animals and finding them homes.

- If they had not gotten rid of the beach with the water area clearly marked off where it was safe to cool off and maybe swim, this tragedy would never have happened. Wanting to be in the lake water on a hot day is natural and understandable. Wolf Lake is a beautiful lake and the water is one of the cleanest in the United States, which is why certain fish sensitive to pollution thrive there. I liked it better before all the improvements. I thought they were going to improve the beach with more sand and maybe rebuild the pool, but all they did was destroy the beach and put down boulders to discourage even walking near the water or wetting your feet. Wolf Lake wasn't as pretty as it is now with the fancy stage and new sidewalks, landscaping, and side streets and millions spent, but it was much more friendly, natural and rustic and enjoyable with benches to sit on and enjoy the lake. There are now modern washrooms, but they're kept locked, so portapottys are still in use. I have often seen wind kite boards being sailed on the lake and these sailors standing in the water because so much of it is shallow. Even the seagulls stand on the sandbars. Maybe there is someway to mark where the sandbars are? And mark with a buoy where it gets deep? Why not provide life jackets to be on the safe side? My condolences to the family of this young boy.

- Victoria Beasley is the kind of compassionate and committed person who should be in charge of animal control, not fired for removing the male and female parents and puppies from a dangerous situation without food or water in extremely hot weather. The owner failed to comply in improving their situation in 36 hours, so saving their lives was the right thing to do. There was no time to wait for a warrant. I was saddened to learn they were returned to the same abusive situation, which was a reckless thing to do. The article said they were pit bulls, so I can't help but wonder if this order to return them was with the hope and intent they would suffer and probably die a slow death. People who do not care about animal welfare should not be allowed within 100 feet of animal control, and certainly not be employed there. Every animal deserves a chance at life and a home.
