  1. For those preaching respect - Yes at one time Kottka might have been looked at as one of the most respected men in town, but things change. There have been many nights I have watched Kottka drive home from a local tavern half blitzed. Nobody would dare take his keys because he's the chief. He and several others can be found on most summer afternoons/evenings sitting in a circle drinking beer in plain sight, while children ride their bikes up and down the sidewalk. What type of example is he setting for the public, for children? Disrespect is not being demoted for an unsatisfactory performance. Disrespect is watching the value of your home depreciate because the men in charge are to busy having a good time to care. Disrespect is when your daughter is afraid to ride her bike because of men standing in groups on corners. Disrespect is having your car or home broken into and your personal belongings taken. Disrespect is wondering if the next gun shot you hear is going to come through your window. I have a hard time finding disrespect in being demoted because the so called job you are doing is simply not good enough. WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD... except in the real world people are fired. I understand Kottka is one man, but he was the main man. He was the one in charge of finding a solution to the ever growing crime rate. What steps did he have in place to correct the problem? I have yet to hear of any. It took 8 shooting, 4 murders, numerous break-ins, etc for something to change. For as long as I can remember, Wood St., the Mansards, and Crestview have caused problems for Griffith residents. Sure we could turn the Mansards and Crestview into a retirement community, and tear down all of the duplexes on the West side of Wood St., but where would the current tenants go? I’ll tell you. They would move elsewhere in town. There are plenty of low income homes, rental properties, and homes being bought, flipped, and sold for cheap in Griffith to accommodate everyone. So how do we stop it?? Here’s an idea… hold the complex owners, property owners, and tenants responsible. Fine them… I’m not talking a slap on the wrist for a company that makes $800 plus a month per tenant for rent. A real fine something that will make them change their renting practices. If we put as much effort into improving the town as we are into the “Poor Kottka and Gulley campaign” we’d have the crime problem solved.
