  1. Gay marriage is a non-issue / red herring that is being brought to the forefront by politicians of both parties to take our minds off the real issues of our struggling economy, crumbling education system, dilapidated infrastructure, and huge national debt, none of which anybody appears to have any real solutions for. Who really cares if gays get married, as long as churches are not forced to marry them?

  2. From what I have read and heard on the news, for the first time in our history, the life expectancy in the US is either declining, or is expected to decline soon. However, also from what I have read, that decline is primarily attributed to the obesity epidemic in this country and not to a lack of medical care. The younger generations are apparently well on their way to eating themselves to death, and this includes the poor who apparently still have the financial means to fatten themselves up for an early death.

Regarding long waits to see specialists; this has always been the case. I remember long waits to see specialists for specific ailments that I had as a youth in the 1960's.

  3. Just as Gary's murder rate does not reflect the entire state of Indiana, the murders that we hear about on the Chicago news stations are mainly confined to certain neighborhoods in Chicago. The murders are primarily perpetrated by street gang thugs who were born and raised in the neighborhoods in which they are doing all of their killing. So, the problem comes from within the neighborhoods themselves, and not from outside sources, as is fantasized by some. Although the Trevon Martin affair in Florida was a tragedy, I find it distressing that the African-American community and its leaders will turn out in bus loads from all over the country when a white kills a black, but will exhibit no similar outrage and national unity over the ongoing black on black slaughter in African-American neighborhoods.

  4. I would think that the vast amount of poor illegal immigrants from Mexico flooding into Texas and their equally poor US citizen children have a lot to do with Texas' high rate of uninsured. I think that malpractice insurance and malpractice awards should be part of our national health insurance plan. I remember seeing a TV news article about one 1st world country that had this kind of system, and it was apparently working well. An objective committee determined the award amounts, versus expensive and protracted lawsuits. Also, I have read that exceedingly high malpractice premiums for some medical specialty areas such as obstetrics are driving doctors out of those specialty practices and are creating shortages.

  5. I support the current caps on malpractice lawsuits. The caps have attracted medical specialists to Indiana, who probably would have otherwise not located here. Of course lawyers do not like the caps, as they get a percentage of the settlement amounts. There is a legitimate place for malpractice lawsuits. Victims of medical malpractice should be allowed to recover the future cost of required care caused by the malpractice, in addition to a reasonable award for the pain and suffering caused. However, the tens of millions of dollars in malpractice awards that we read about serve to establish dynasties of wealth for future generations of the victims’ families that they do not deserve.

  6. The North Koreans have been ruthless and crazy for years, even before the most recent nut case took power. Remember when it was discovered a while back that the North Koreans had kidnapped Japanese citizens and had taken them back to North Korea, apparently to develop them for espionage purposes, or to use as leverage to coerce their families in Japan into doing espionage work? This is real. Little wonder the Japanese are wary of them, and there are many ways of delivering a nuclear device into a country, which includes sneaking it in piece by piece. Actually, if the North Koreans stage some kind of attack on South Korea, it would give the US a good excuse to take out North Korea’s nuclear capabilities with conventional bombs delivered by either cruise missiles or bombers. I would suspect that the Chinese are talking rather tough to North Korea behind closed doors, as a new Korean conflict would disrupt or stop China's lucrative trade with the US.

  8. I have mixed feelings about charter schools. On the one hand, if they do a much better job than our regular public schools, then we should applaud them. On the other hand, by focusing attention on charter schools are we not just giving up on the majority of our students who attend the established public school system schools? Further, charter schools tend to attract the best students and the most supportive parents, which tends to skew the comparison between them and public schools. One only need to watch some of the documentary-type programs on television about what goes on inside of public schools to understand that the failings of that system primarily results from the lack of commitment and support for teachers by the parents of children who either sleep through or fight through class. This is a social problem that the charter schools will not resolve. The charter school system will only serve to separate the good students from the underachievers, which may be necessary, but it will not cure the underlying social problems that need to be addressed.

  9. I don't like traps either because they are cruel, and because people can end up stepping in them. Also, my observation has been that when raccoons move into an area, they are so numerous that traps would never be an effective way of getting rid of them anyway. Raccoons are usually attracted to unsecured garbage receptacles and other sources of easy food that humans inadvertently provide them. This can be confirmed by a visit to any heavily-used campground. The best way to be rid of them is to eliminate the food sources that are attracting them.

  10. I think that we need to take whatever action is necessary to snuff out those who are making war on our country and who are making plans to kill US citizens. Since when have we ever been sympathetic to the rights of such traitors? If my memory is correct this controversy started because we wasted a US citizen/terrorist in Yemen who was both a terrorist organization leader, and who was planning and implementing attacks on US citizens and future attacks on the US mainland. You cannot sink any lower than planning and leading acts of terror against your own country. Also, the person killed in Yemen was making war on his own country from outside the US borders. Why should he be treated any differently from any other enemy doing the same thing? How could due process even be implemented in such a situation? Construing those circumstances into scenarios where drone bombs will be used to attack citizens within the US is absurd. This controversy was started for political reasons, and not because of any real dangers to the liberties of US citizens residing within the US.
