  1. McAhron is right and VanTil has nothing to do with the construction. It was designed by the ACOE contractors, the construction contractor was selected by the ACOE, and the construction was managed by ACOE out of the Griffith office. Some of the funds should be withheld from payment until corrections are made. If corrections are not made then it's time to go to the lawyers. The process could take years though. Don't worry, there won't be any floods in the mean time.

  2. Poor Russ. Next year he is going to have even more trails to walk, and will be able along the Pennsy Greenway directly to Lansing. Finally Munster will have a bike path connection to an adjoining community. And by the end of next year he might be able to cross the Little Calumet River on a new bridge connecting the two sections of the Monon Trail. But I am sure Russ won't be complaining. I wish I could say the same for J Bird.

  3. Well, good for you J. The sidewalks in front of your house are part of the non-motorized transportation network. In all probability I don't use "your" streets and sidewalks but I paid part of the cost. I also pay for schools and baseball diamonds but I don't have any kids. That's called civilization. There are some things that are best paid for by the public. Trails benefit everyone even if they don't use them. Even you, J.

  4. J Bird, I pay a "rental fee" every month for the fire hydrant near my house but I have never used it. I hope I never do. But I don't mind paying the fee. I also pay a healthy donation for schools but I don't have kids. I don't use the soccer fields or baseball diamonds. And I would suspect there are publicly financed facilities that you use and I don't but I pay for. It's what civilization is all about. Would you prefer anarchy?

  5. This is the letter I sent to Susan Erler, the writer of the story:

In your story about the new facilities scheduled to be built in Crown Point on the Erie Lackawanna Trail you mentioned that the trail extends to the Little Calumet River. You should know that the Erie Lackawanna Trail actually extends all the way to Rabin Plaza, at Sibley Boulevard in downtown Hammond.

Two projects recently completed make this trail a complete, paved off-road trail extending for 17 miles. The first project was the paving of the Little Calumet River levee from Wicker Park to Northcote Avenue. The second project is a tunnel under the new section of Indianapolis Boulevard connecting Wicker Park with the Highland portion of the Erie Lackawanna Trail.

The trail was repaved through the entire length of Highland this year, and portions in Schererville were also repaved. The trail includes three separated grade crossings of the busy thoroughfares of US 30, Ridge Road, I-80/94 and now US 41, and a separate crossing of the Little Calumet River.

I will attach a photograph I took last week of the new tunnel under US 41.

In the future when mentioning this trail please give it the credit it is due and describe it as a complete 17 mile long trail connecting six of the most populous communities in northwest Indiana.

  6. Swampy, you might have found the same story I did, in a newspaper covering Vero Beach. The engineering manager is quoted, in the last line, "No garbage". Just plant waste.
What is needed is a high volume, uniform source of plant waste. What do we have in Indiana? Corn stover, of course. Lots of it. That's why Purdue U has been working for years to make ethanol from corn stover, with practical technology. The only thing that has worked so far is digestion with strong acids, and we don't want large volumes of that stuff around. Here's a link to the story if anyone is interested: http://www.tcpalm.com/news/2012/jun/20/ineos-bio-energy-plant-will-take-in-indian-river/

  8. Bike trails run along active railroads in a lot of places. The Green Bay trail in Waukeegan runs 20 feet from the high speed Metra commuter line. All you need is a fence and a plain chain link fence would be sufficient. All the rest of the communities in the area have bike trails that people enjoy a great deal. This is a chance for Dyer to connect and join the fun. Sure you can put the bike on the back of your car and drive to a trail head in Schererville or Munster but it's more fun to leave the gas guzzler at home and hop on your bike.

  10. Re: "Among capital program projects for 2013 and 2014 are ... the last two phases of
the Pennsy Greenway bike path, completion of the West Lakes bike path and
the third phase of Community Park renovation."

In April, at "Cornucopia" officials from Munster said the Pennsy bike trail
connection from Fisher Street to the Illinois State Line would commence
construction this year. It seems I have been hearing "wait until next year"
for that connection to be built every since the Lansing portion of the bike
path was built in 2006. It seems to get pushed back one year every year -
the "annual, annual delay". I also noticed that the "bridges over ditches" connection to Highland and Wicker Park has dropped off the radar completely.

I don't know what the "completion of the West Lake bike path" would be. At
one time there was to be a sidewalk between 45th Avenue and Superior Street.
    Maybe that has been resurrected.

I hope the Pennsy projects actually get built next year.
