  2. Even though I have had a few children in my classes during the 30 years of my teaching, I have found that most of the students would really rather come to school in a situation like this. (What I meant here is that I have had a few children in my classes that don't want to come to school, but most would rather come. I am not sure this reads clearly in my original post.)

  3. I would have to agree that this seems to be a child of elementary-school age. Even though I have had a few children in my classes during the 30 years of my teaching, I have found that most of the students would really rather come to school in a situation like this. In most elementary classrooms the students miss out on some fun learning and activities when they miss school. And, when students miss school like this it really hurts all of the students in the class and not just monetarily. I spent my entire planning break on Tuesday filtering through make-up work instead of using the time to prep for a lesson or evaluate current papers from the class group. It was mostly for students who were not sick when they weren't in school. I am supposed to be sure that they get caught up and do the work that they missed. It takes quite a bit of time to help them get the work done even if someone else helps to get it done. And then I have to grade these papers. And then I have to go back into my gradebooks (paper, pencil and computer) to enter the grades. I am just trying to point out that it helps EVERYONE if students are in school when they are able to be in school.

  4. "Eineman signed a new five-year deal that goes to June 30, 2017. The school corporation pays her a salary of $155,410. It grows to nearly $200,000 when perks are added. Angel said Eineman receives raises based on how students in the corporation are performing." So let's see here.... her salary will increase by about $45,000 in five years based on how students are performing. The person who is actually teaching these students every day might see an increase in their salary of about $100 next year dependent upon the evaluations they receive from administrators (many will see no increase at all). The scales seem to be a bit unbalanced here.

  5. Who is really to gain from a development like this? I would have to say ... the developer and the people who are then able to move into our "vale of paradise"...maybe a land owner but they probably won't really get a fair deal. Having lived in this "vale of paradise" for 30 years of my life I am finding that it is no longer the same place. It seems that every time I venture into a new area of the city there are more traffic lights installed because of increased traffic. The round-abouts that are being developed don't seem to be of the right size to handle the traffic that uses them and I try to avoid the one near the University when I can. The people of East Porter County Schools have worked hard to become a high-quality school district even though the city of Valparaiso has hampered their efforts many times with the development and/or annexation in areas of Washington Township. This appears to be following the same pattern. What does Washington Township and its residents stand to gain from this development? When I know that this development will be beneficial for the citizens in that area then I might begin to understand why this development is a good thing. Until that time.... hoping and praying that the people who moved to the area in hopes of providing a good education for their children and lifestyle for their families will not have their dreams squashed by "them".

I don't see any comments about this. Why WOULDN'T this money be paid back now? Shouldn't even be a question I don't think.

  7. Thanks to all of you who provided some clarification here. My own daughter would be a fantastic teacher (she has taught many things in my classroom) but she has repeatedly stated that she will not join this profession because she has seen what the life is really like. I enjoy my job, but it is far from "perfect". Now I should get back to working on those lesson plans that need to be done before tomorrow. And I do have evaluations that need to be checked, grades entered into the computer, and analysis of who needs to have remediation along with when I will work that into my schedule. Wait, I should enjoy Labor Day off like my neighbors are doing. It is a beautiful day I think.

  8. As an educator in one of the highest-achieving school corporations in the state of Indiana, I would like to thank those of you who are pointing out what this is going to do to our future. On several of the comments I felt like I should say, "Amen!" Morale is definitely at an all-time low and we teachers who have taught for 20+ years are feeling the push to leave the profession. Newer teachers do add to a school by bringing fresh ideas, etc., but experienced teachers and leaders are the backbone of the profession. Get rid of the backbone and.... yes that is really a smart idea (sarcasm intended here). When a school is achieving 90+% scores on the mandated (time-consuming) standardized tests and yet almost doesn't receive an "A" grade from the government I think something is not right. We have been in school for over a week now and every day we have had some kind of assessment to have the students complete. Assessment, assessment, assessment. When do the students learn the things that they need in order to do well on the assessments? Hmmm. I take risks by taking time to insert my creative ways of teaching into my students' lessons. It is the only way that I know to teach. It helps my students enjoy coming to school. There is a good chance that according to the state, I will be rated as an "ineffective teacher" if I continue to do this. Guess I'd better get ready for my name to be publicized on that list because my students come first! They always have and they always will!

  9. Jean Hitchcock, principal/executive director at Signature, said there are 340 students at Signature and it operates separate from the school system."Our philosophy is that every student can learn if allowed the right environment and the opportunity to work hard. The bar is set high here and we keep it high. We believe that every student is better because of it," she said.
"The bar is set high..." for students? for teachers? If for students, what happens if they don't reach the 'high bar'. Not every student is capable of reaching the 'high bar' I am pretty sure. Or do they only have students who can--- hmmmmmm. Their philosophy doesn't seem to be different from the public schools that I am familiar with. This comment just really confused me.
