  1. When my son entered kindergarten a few years ago, there were three local options: Marquette Elementary, Banneker and Charter School of the Dunes. I know there are good, caring teachers at all three schools. However, it was Charter School of the Dunes that provided our son with a great kindergarten teacher, who used positive discipline to keep order in the class. He did not have to fear random acts of corporal punishment (as at some Gary public schools) and he was in a safe school in a safe neighborhood, with a great principal and a creative staff. CSOTD really cared about him as an individual and that sense of caring was felt throughout the school. The letter grade system for schools is a joke. Rather than bow to political pressure, I would like to see BSU recognize that the students at CSOTD need their school and the school needs BSU's help to come up with a remediation plan. Let's not give up on a place that is getting so many things right! Let's see if positive guidance from BSU can help turn it around!

  2. This is sad news. The Charter School of the Dunes has been making real progress. They have a terrific principal and staff and are working on a new state-of-the-art building. BSU should rethink this decision. It is bad for the children and families at the school, as well as the community.

  3. Most people forced to rent out their homes are doing so because of the poor sales market. Part of the reason for the poor sales market is that Lake County residents pay property taxes at far higher rates than those paid anywhere else in Indiana. The reason for that is the bloated government structure in Lake County. I hope the state continues to pressure Lake County to cut the fat.
