- Personal Account: In 2006 I went to Community Hospital of Munster for maternity care during my 4th pregnancy. My first child was delivered c-section due to failure to progress after 36 1/2 hours of labor in which I was kept on the monitor and in bed. My 2nd (3 1/2 hours labor) and third (12 hours labor) children were born VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Caeserian) due to freedom of movement, and management of pitocin. At Munster, I was told by the physician that "due to this litiginous society in which we live, under no circumstances" would I be allowed to attempt my third VBAC. I was presented with paperwork to sign indicating that I was agreeing to a C-section at three months into my pregnancy, well before the need for a C-section could possibly be determined medically necessary. I went to St Anthony's in Crown Point, found a very dedicated staff supportive of VBAC, and delivered my fourth child as my third VBAC after three hours labor and with no complications. Thank goodness there was an alternative for me! Parents need to be allowed to discuss options with their physicians and doctors need to be allowed to do what is right for each patient, not what works best for the hospital legal team.
