  1. Postal losses are due almost exclusively to a 2006 law passed by a lame duck GOP Congress requiring the USPS to prefund 75 years worth of future retiree health benefits in a 10 year window. This is for people not only not hired yet, but not even born yet. The actual CSRS fund is overfunded by over $50 billion and the FERS fund is overfunded by about $8 billion. Remove the onerous requirements, not imposed on any other business in America - public or private - and the losses would virtually disappear. This ABC story is a typical uninformed or uninvestigated sound bite taken right from postal management trying to scare the people and lawmakers into allowing them to abrogate contracts with the postal unions. They are currently in an arbitration with the National Association of Letter Carriers and are trying to influence the decision. Cuts of over 100,000 employees have been made to deal with the reduction of first class mail and productivity is at an all time high. Comparable private businesses like UPS pay their employees MORE than USPS pays their employees and their retirement package is also much better.

  2. Yes the USPS pays gasoline taxes. They get their gas at the same stations you get your gas at. UPS is not cheaper or more efficient than the USPS. Go to both sites and see what they each charge for packages, especially the Priority Mail option for the Post Office. With the flat rate option it can be HALF the price of UPS. Also, there is a UPS truck unloading parcels daily at Post Offices across America for USPS to deliver because we are more efficient than them. It's called last mile delivery. They charge so much they can afford to pay the USPS to make the actual delivery to the home. And lastly, 6 day delivery is a huge advantage form the USPS and deeply appreciated by many postal patrons, especially the Netflix users that get their movies for the weekend.
