I, Jerrold Haran, Asset Protection Associate for Wal-mart store #1618 in Hobart, Indiana was involved in an attempted apprehension which lead to physical confrontation with an unknown male subject on February, 3rd, 2013 at approximately 12:20 AM . The male subject was seen selecting a bottle of Skyy Vodka and concealing it in his pants. The subject then headed in the direction of the Grocery door exit. I then stopped the first associate I saw and asked her to stand by the exit as well to be my witness for the apprehension. I then approached the male subject and identified myself to him. After doing so the subject denied have the bottle of Skyy Vodka. I then explained to him I watched him select and conceal the bottle in his pants. The subject then started to turn in the direction I requested him to proceed in but then assaulted me by very quickly turning and striking the left side of my face with a closed fist resulting in my glasses being damaged and knocked of my face. Immediately after the subject struck me I attempted to restrain him for safety reasons. The subject then ducked resulting in me holding him in a head lock. The subject then ran in circles while I was holding him causing me to become dizzy and fall. When I began to fall I released the subject and he proceeded to flee. I then got up from the ground I was dizzy and it was hard to see without my glasses on. I looked toward the male subject and seen him assaulting the female associate by pushing her. I then ran over to her direction and grabbed the male subject and requested him to get away from the female associate. I also requested him to stop and calm down. When he failed to do so I then physically redirected him to the exit and stood outside to verify he was leaving and to find out his direction of travel. During the process the male subject dropped his phone. I then contacted the Hobart Police Department and filed a police report. When Hobart Police arrived on the scene I gave them possession of the phone. By providing Hobart Police with the cell phone they were then able to obtain the name owner. The unknown male subject was later indentifed as Antonio Deshawn Lee Walton-Rogers due to positive identification through a photo line up. On February, 8th, 2013 I was terminated from Wal-mart for a policy violation. According to Wal-mart I violated policy by trying to restrain the subject. Wal-mart's (AP-09) policy clearly states "Authorized Associates may use reasonable force to physically limit or control the movements of a subject. Only the least amount of force necessary to affect the detention under the circumstances may be utilized." Even though the policy states this I was still terminated for my actions. Wal-mart expects me to protect their merchandise but won't allow me to protect myself. The law states I have a legal right to defend myself and Walmart claims I don't.
