- I lived in Gary, graduated from West Side in 95. The school system was getting bad when I was there. I had three children who WERE in Gary schools. I started to see none of them bringing home homework, really focusing on what they learned that day. The thing that threw me the most is when I went up to the school and some of the teachers that were there when I was there or even my sister was there in the 70's were still there. I knew then that there had to be a change in order for my children to grow educationally. We moved to Portage about 7 years ago and all three are doing very well, two are in Honors classes even. Gary school system is not preparing the children for college at all. Something needs to be done. Is it because Gary is an urban city? Is it because the city officials don't care? Is it because the school board is made up of people that have been sitting there for so long they forgot how to do their job? I believe Gary can change, but it's going to take the ENTIRE city to improve. Not just one group of concerned parents BUT everyone! Without the children growing into educated adults where is that going to lead us?
