  1. The same thing is said for the public schools. When the NCLB came out some number of years ago, this newspaper published a comment by a school principal in Lake County, not sure exactly where (Hanover or Dyer) that the scores given to the school according to NCLB was low 'due to the children with disabilities'. This is not new, whether it is a charter or public school. Every school has its secrets, the most horrifying secret is how they teach children with disabilities and with disrespect. Not all of us are idiots, like some folks who think they know everything but have not lived our lives.

  2. I have visited CSD several times as a guest for one of the classrooms. I also shared my language in the classroom on several occasions. I also taught several teachers over the summer in ASL. The school is dedicated and I have seen how much hard work they use and give.

This is reminiscent of what is going on at Indiana School for the Deaf. The government fails to see the system as whole. Not everything works for everyone, there is no 'one size fits all' solution. Often, ISD gets students from public schools and this affects their grade, only a few who had ALL, not one little piece are successful students.

Y'all know the adage "It takes a village to raise a child"? A Chinese proverb we all would be well off remembering. It is the RESPONSIBILITY of the parents, family, school system, teachers, sports/clubs/organizations, AND the CHILD to ensure quality education and the ability to stand up for their education, WHETHER the education is provided by public schools or charter schools.

Why are Gary/Hammond residents whining about the unfairness of Munster, Schererville, Merrillville, and Hobart schools? We shouldn't be looking outward to solve our own problems but within. We are practicing the current federal government mentality of being nosy in other people's business rather than looking within.

Competition is healthy. It keeps our cities, citizens and communities healthy and innovation. Politicians in general do not do well with competition unless it has to do with voting. That is why many of our elected officials are still in office in Lake County.

If you think I have been off point, think about this - what we do with education is tied to how we function as a community in the real world; whether local, municipal, regional, statewide or nationally, even globally.

  3. Are any of you on the comment roll teachers? K-12 or college professors? Do any of you have any form of disability or come from a minority language/culture? While I do agree on some merits; we still miss the whole picture of how this came to be. Many of the charter schools are small in class size and tend to have a better social structure compared to public schools. They are hard working and dedicated. Education is a life time journey.

As some folks mentioned, not every school works for every child. I know a friend of mine pulled her children out of the Hammond School System because one big aspect is that she was unable to participate in her children's education as a PARENT. She looked into other schools in Munster, Highland and Griffith and due to the cost of an education out of district, she decided to homeschool her kids.

My sister teaches at one of the charter schools and I have visited her classroom several times to participate in a project that she had for her kids and for me to teach them sign language. Those children are hungry for what they can get and if folks want to bash charter schools, they gotta start bashing public schools.... BASHING is NOT ENOUGH. Be a POSITIVE solution to the issue. If you don't know what you're saying, I suggest that you sit down and shut up before you find your foot in your mouth and in your arse on something you have no idea what you're talking about.

The big picture here, is the BIG PICTURE. I teach at a high school and I am astonished at how kids behave these days. Bring back the uniforms, make the classrooms smaller, hire more teachers (after all they pay taxes, the less the people work due to technology, the less taxes are paid into the government) and empower (if necessary PUSH) parents to be involved in their children's education. Less government interference in education, especially when those who are in political power have no idea of how education is critical to ALL CHILDREN, not nitpicking on those who 'happen' to be DIFFERENT.

Daniels as a President at PU.... that's an example. PU also receives taxpayer funds, did'ya know that?
