  1. Tis a shame. I will certainly miss the comments, as I have gotten more information from the posters here than I get from The Times reporters. I'm old enough to remember when reporters actually investigated and reported; unfortunately, now the papers are simply aggregators. Very little original thought or in-depth reporting. Who will now ask the questions that don't get asked by the reporters? Or more importantly, who will answer the questions?

  2. To that internet guy, Thanks, but I don't live there. Manor is a busy street, so I put it there (with permission). I wanted more people to see it, and perhaps do their own.

  3. I have a yard sign. I spent two days making it myself. If you want to see it, take a ride down Manor Avenue, south of Evergreen, north of Fisher, on the east side of the street. It's not hard to do, just a little paint and some wood. Since the anti-referendum people do not have $25,000 to spend, we have to make our own.

  4. School enrollment is down. We already pay 1.199 per hundred for school taxes, versus Schererville at 0.55. They want an additional 0.199. That's a 16.59% increase. 33% of the population in town is 55 and over. Should we ask our seniors how much of an increase they received on their social security? It was 1.7%.

I took the teacher's contract, and the teacher roster at one middle school. I worked out that the average salary is just north of $59,000. That is base, for 10 months. They also get an additional $5,800 for health insurance. The average number of students per teacher is 20 (2010 numbers).

It matters not which pot it goes to; what matters is what the total is. The total of my school taxes went up 33% last year. God knows what the increase will be for this year.

I will vote NO to this money grab, and urge others to do the same.

  5. Mil, sorry, I forgot that people on this site actually can think. You are not one of them, but there are others. The best and cheapest electricity is generated by hydro, but since we have none of the necessary geography here, that's not an option. Well, it is, as long as the grid is working and they can sent it from out west. Nuclear works too, but oops, let's not forget about Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, and our most recent triumph in Japan. Solar is REALLY not an option here, maybe wind might work. Options, yes, but are they all workable?

I don't see the King and Queen running around in little electric cars. For them it's Air Force One, Two, and lovely limos.

  6. What the moron doesn't realize is that electricity has to be made. We make it with coal (which he has condemned), oil, and natural gas. Then, we will all have to sell the cars we have to buy these overpriced things, and who can afford that?

By the way, did you notice that he came to Chicago in his $180,000 per hour JET, and drove to Argonne in armored stretch limos? I wonder what kind of mileage these toys get, and we pay for. This fool sure knows how to talk out of his A--.

  7. "Hamm said he is concerned that if Senate Bill 585 is passed, it would cap Lake's income tax at no more than 1 percent ...". This is the main idea behind passing it immediately. If they wait, they will be capped at 1%. If they do it before this bill passes, they can up it to whatever they like. I have seen 1.75% mentioned. Who would like to bet that it quickly becomes 2.5% or better. AND, we will still have high property taxes and "adjustments" to the property tax cap.
