- I was there last night, and two weeks ago because my Grissom son came home beside himself because he overheard the MATRONS talking about Grissom possibly closing. I went to the school board meeting two weeks ago to find out what was going on and sure enough, that was a consideration, a school closing. At that meeting they discussed the deficit and financials and we were assured ALL OPTIONS would be explored and that was a LAST resort to make up the 1.7 million dollar deficit along with outsourcing janitorial. Two weeks later...last night..After lip service of holding community forums, etc. for solutions..and after many pleading, passionate statements from our parents and teachers...the board voted to outsource janitorial and then close a school.I have been a Lake Ridge parent since 1996 and have already had one child go head start-12th grade and now have another in Grissom in 4th grade. I have never been so disgusted by the state of the school system. The very IDEA of what is happening is DISGUSTING. They are going to devastate Black Oak by closing Grissom. There will be nothing left. The library and the school within blocks of each other...what will the kids have left? It's MORE than a school...it's the heart of the community there and this side of Ridge Road has already lost TWO schools. The outsourced janitorial is not what is best for our kids and buildings. Some of the janitorial staff like Archie Doran have been around for decades and no high turn over UNinvested company will EVER replace the roles the custodial staff have in our childrens lives! The school board is NOT looking at what's best for our kids and communities..this is the start of a downward spiral..and if they think they can't get money from property taxes now, how will they get it when people move from the school district?
