- It is understandable that Americans are tiring of the war in Afghanistan. Perhaps another strategy to isolate the Taliban and Al Qaeda would have been more effective and less costly for Americans. However, McCrady is wrong to believe that all we have to do is give peace a chance. Have we not learned the lesson of the 1938 Munich Conferece that appeasment does not work? Those who believe that radical Muslims hate the US for its support of Israel are wrong. Ian Buruma and Avishai Margalit posit in "Occidentalism" that Al Qaeda attacked the US for the same reasons that Germany attacked its neighbors and Japan attacked the US. It is a romantic vision of an earlier time when knights in shining armor rode to the rescue of damsals in distress. The Nazis, Fascists, Japanese Army, and Al Qaeda despised Western capitalism. They viewed the West as nations of merchants who were incapable of heroic acts. There is a reason that A Qaeda attacked the World Trade Center on September 11.

- Prince's approach to discipline is nothing new. Does anyone remeber the pictures in the hammond Times in the 1960s of juvenile delinquents sentenced to clean the dead alewives on the beaches of Lake Michigan by Judge Obermiller? Unfortunately, administrators in public schools face legal and union contract obstacles in using physical work assignments instead of other forms of punishment. Schools do not have the funds for after-school detention and urban schools are under federal and state pressure to reduce suspensions and expulsions.

- Another cause of Illinois' pension problem is that the pensions are indexed every year for inflation. My daughter in southern IL has several neihbors who retired from state jobs in their mid 50s. Many of these retirees will collect more money in retirement than they earned working. IL teachers like to respond by saying they are not eligible for Social Security. True. But they also don't pay into SS. IL teachers earn substantially more than IN teachers. They could easily invest the equivalent of FICA into a K403b, areduce their taxable income, and retire with a nice egg nest.

- USDA threatens to lay off meat inspectors but still spend money send employees to a conference in California to taste the local wines and indulge succulent meals on the taxpayer's dime. USDA is also sponsoring another conference in Oregon next month. Have we forgotten the conference in Las Vegas where the government spent our money on expenive breakfasts, sing songs mocking the taxpayers, and sitting in an ensuite hot tub sipping champagne.
