- I wouldn't count on gentrification taking place anywhere near the above ground "storage" landfill in which the dredgings will be warehoused, particularly as it is in close proximity to the high school and a middle school. The good news is that the contaminated sediments will finally - after almost 30 years of trying - be removed from the Ship Canal and thus prevented from pouring into Lake Michigan - although it should be noted that only part of the sediments will be dredged. The bad news is that with all the creativity of U.S. scientists and EPA and elsewhere, no better solution than a dredge and dump operation could be implemented. This is the same technology that was proposed back in the mid-1980's (and earlier) when the initial attempts were made to dredge the Harbor and Canal. Only that time they wanted to build the landfill in Lake Michigan - fortunately intense public pressure and organized community action prevented that. This is not much different save for a few upgraded tweaks, but these legacy chemicals will be East Chicago's legacy and Northwest Indiana's legacy to many generations to come. I think we need a better approach to gentrification than that - not to mention better ways to protect the health and safety of the residents of East Chicago. And, of course, not to mention its location at the fringe of an even bigger environmental assault with the new BP pipeline and facility to import foreign oil from the Canada tarsand fields. When will Northwest Indiana ever enter the 21st century with an economic development strategy that doesn't depend on exacerbating our history of environmental assault, but is forward looking and innovative instead?
