- I, too, wonder what has changed? Is it the media coverage itself that makes this look glamorous? Is it the access to weapons? Is it the fact the population is higher...which means more mentally ill people even if the % of mentally ill people stays the same? Is the % staying the same or is it increasing? I wonder if there is any correlation between chemcial exposure and/or drug use during pregnancy and the rate of mentally ill children? Another fact to consider, I believe back in the day people who were thought to be mentally ill were locked away in institutions. Now, everybody's rights must be respected. Nobody can make you take medications or even seek treatment for your mental illness if you do not want to. You can roam the streets with your untreated schizophrenia, as long as you are not threatening to kill yourself or others. I am not saying all factors above are involved, but I do think there are more than one factors involved. Just my unsolicited opinion.
