  1. Doug Ross says..."It should be no surprise that increasingly we have received reports critical of allowing people to comment without identifying themselves. It’s argued that to do so is simply unfair, unkind.

Well, we have come to the conclusion that those objecting to comments posted anonymously are right."

OK Dougie, here's your goose and gander opportunity. You tell us that you have received reports from anonymous people saying that it is "unfair" and "unkind" to allow anonymous people to comment. Who are these anonymous objectors, critical of anonymous discourse? If the proper course, which by the way I don't agree, is to personally identify remarks, then start with identifying those that want to stifle dissent. The political class(less) can surround themselves with compliant yes men and it drives them crazy to be out of their bubble of sycophants. The anonymous comments are out of that bubble. By removing anonymous comment you service the political class and disservice the community. Who's your master?

  2. This guy Ross is so full of himself. It's hard to believe that such a thin skin can contain such an inflated ego. Goodbye ad-clicks. Goodbye page views. Ross says "We expected serious dialogue about serious issues in our community." He's talking about his media company's expectations of comments but that statement is also true of readers' view of his company's "news" stories. As for the future requirement to "identify" yourself along with your comment, does Ross have any idea how unworkable that is? How many bogus Twicher or Facefool accounts are there? Millions. So what? Need a Facebook account to comment? Make one up. Who's going to verify the identity? A previous asset run by The Times, also a forum for comments, was shut down because of malicious activity. A columnist reported evidence that the malicious activity could be traced back to it's source at an agency of government. Instead of following up, they instead turned off the lights. Funny choice for a "news" organization. Last one out from NWI.com, turn off the lights.

  3. You can't seriously complain that an unstaffed tower will keep scheduled traffic from this airport. The emphasis should be on "scheduled". If American Airlines said they would begin daily flights to their hubs from Gary----if only there were green M&Ms gratis for their office workers--- GYY would get green M&Ms on every desk. Likewise, if they said they would begin those flight if the tower were manned or womanned, GYY would get those comtrollers. If an unstaffed tower raises an airlines insurance costs, they can negotiate that those costs be reimbursed. GYY and the FAA can then easily analyse if they want to pay for controllers or insurance. In the meantime, the tower should be closed. Easy enough to unlock the doors and power up the equipment IF NEEDED.

  4. How would lifting the embargo help? What are we withholding from them? Access to our "mostly" capitalist markets? Cuba is a socialist paradise! An economic system and social welfare state that growing numbers of "Americans" are being duped into voting for here only 41 minutes away. Once Obama, his ilk, and his party descend the States into a similar socialist "paradise", the embargo will be lifted as conditions will have equalized across the Straits of Florida. Toilet paper, soap, and shampoo, are the province of the bourgeoisie, don't cha know?

  5. Who's had a change of heart and is now putting heat on this joint? Besides the positive press this place got when it opened, and it's connection with a DUI that killed an innocent man, we haven't seen this type of story in the paper. How is it that last year's 48 calls got no arrest mentions in the paper? Now we've got 2 stories in a week. The place is also only open on weekends. I doubt they call for police service when they aren't even open, so the 37 police call figure reported here means that police get called there, on average, every night it's open. Won't be open much longer. Someone's had a change of heart.

  6. Wow! They finally have an objective! "The ultimate plan is to have planes taking off and landing at this airport." Really?! An airport with planes taking off and landing? Why didn't someone come up with that years ago? The airport is always worth a few laughs. Quoting "a strategic business plan" (how many plans is that now?) "Attracting investors for a facility without commercial traffic, confronted with substantial financial challenges and hampered by a poor public image is at best unlikely." So when rational investing is "unlikely", flush tax dollars down the rat hole! What are taxpayers going to do? Pay, lose their property, or go to jail? LOL! Stop! You're giving me a stitch!

  7. Come on people! TeaPublican is an obvious infiltrating plant! Like when a leftist melds in with the conservatives at a rally to discredit them. If you can't see that, in their contrived and caricatured speech patterns, stay off the roads because you can't see past your nose, let alone read between the lines!

  8. "... We're broke, and when you're broke, you got to get creative on how to make money.” Tom McDermott. The city got the money, or will get the money, by selling bonds payable with future tax revenues. Spend today what you'll earn tomorrow. That's the MO of McDermott and every other overleveraged huckster. That's called mortgaging your future. For what? To give a 10 million dollar check to a company that earns that much in a few hours? Or if you want to play a semantics game, maybe that 10 million will be electronically deposited into a Potash bank account? Possibly even a Canadian bank account. It is not a discount. It's money up front. It's worse than 10 million because future taxes will also pay the interest on that money plus the costs of issuing the bonds. Maybe someone at The Times can tell us who earned those fees, and what the dollar amount was? I'm curious what the motive is of commenters who defend what was after all, a campaign ad paid for with tax dollars. Because that is what it is all about, isn't it?

  9. Pay no attention to TeaPublican as they are a liberal infiltrating agitator. It's hard to believe that James doesn't see or wont acknowledge the parallels that CMCP has identified. Abortion is a "right" created out of the musings of a handful of SCOTUS justices. The 2nd Amendment was drafted, argued, compromised on , and voted by thousands of representatives of The People. It's right is explicit, where abortion rights was only found to be implied. Yet libs like James seek controls, regulation, and often outright bans, that amount to nothing but arbitrary feel good notions on inanimate property. Besides 3 rounds, what is the difference between a 7 and 10 round magazine, other than the arbitrary choice of the regulator? Human LIFE has very scientific characteristics, so much so that abortion regulation can very well be founded on scientific and irrefutable data. Oh, and James...no abortion is safe. Not to the conceived but unborn Human Life. Odd that James would say, "Republicans seemingly don’t get it. If they want the support of the poor and minorities, they have to back programs to help those who didn't get a fair start in life or got derailed along the way. It’s called compassion." James seemingly doesn't get it. If there is anyone who doesn't get a fair start in life and gets "derailed along the way" they are the aborted. God has given them life, Man has given them death. How is that compassion?

  10. Awe, Dougie's got a man crush on Tommy. Tom's got Doug wrapped around his...errr finger. It's been clear for years now how gently The Times treats McDermott. Tom plays hardball but The Times tosses him nothing but softballs. I'd like to ask Doug if he thinks Punch 10 is what's best for the region? Tom has promoted lesser, often criminal candidates for public office just because they belong to the the same party he does. I know it's hard to avoid the criminals at a Lake County Dem pow wow, but wow, talk about selling out your principles. I always thought the press prided themselves as a Fourth Estate. A willingness to check power through probing questions and exposure to the governed, the actions of their government. Often the press acts as devil's advocate to analyze an issue. Ross seems to wallow in the Lake County Demsty and relishes the mantle of promoter of all things Tom. Through those deeds, he is indeed the devil's advocate. Looks like Doug is on board the Tom for congress bandwagon. Legal detours should make getting there from here an impossibility.
