  1. A number of years ago, a local teen was killed near where I live. Today there still stands the remnants of her memorial at that site. The tattered stuffed animals and ribbons, the blobs of candle wax, today look like nothing more than a trash heap, yet no one will remove it for fear of looking heartless. Let us know when the appropriate time has passed for removal of such memorials.
My prayers are with the family of this young man. May they find peace in this time of sadness.

  2. Did you not read that she is donating some of the money toward cancer research? What is more important? That she donate her hair to make wigs for a child suffering, or that money be donated to help with research to bring an end to cancer? She has donated hair two times before and has now chosen to help fight the disease. Good for her!

  3. Thank you, Debra, for the two times you have donated your hair to Locks of Love. And thank you for the information about selling your hair. In these tough economic times, this would be a great way to earn some money to help a family through a couple of months. It is also thoughtful of you to be donating some of your money to cancer research. Praying that one day there will be a cure to stop this disease in it's tracks for all patients.

  5. As far as the festival of the lakes goes, how many parents dropped off kids at the fest? I know I took a van full of 7 teens and dropped them off 3 of those nights. Not everyone who walks into the fest drove there. We have many friends who also park down the street and walk to the fest rather than pay for the parking. It's nice weather then, so why pay to park closer?

  6. So thankful that there were no injuries caused by this accident. Had a train been going by at the same time, this could have been a tragedy.

  7. I was rear-ended at this intersection 3 years ago. I was heading west on 85th. I had turned on my left turn signal before going downhill, came to a complete gradual stop. I was waiting for the opposite traffic to clear so I could turn. As I had turned my head to say something to my daughter who was sitting in the front passenger seat, my eyes glanced into the rearview mirror, I saw nothing but headlights!! I couldn't even say anything before BANG! followed by a second BANG! A large pickup truck had smacked my Jeep Cherokee. Both the driver of the truck and myself had a horrible time trying to get a hold of 911 in that vicinity. They would try to connect us through as we were in unincorporated, and we would get disconnected. Finally, an off duty sheriff officer passed and stopped to help us. The driver of the truck said he didn't see me until the last minute and had slammed his brakes before hitting me. Well, considering that I had my windows down as we have no AC, we didn't hear any tire squealing, and considering that he hit me two times, tells me that his truck was still in motion after hitting me the first time. The force of push his foot would have had on the brake in that forward motion of coming to a fast stop, would have kept his car from slamming me a second time, it was not a gentle bump. In the end, no citations were given, and my Jeep was totalled. I believe travelling fast, and possibly talking or texting while driving and not watching the road led to my Jeeps demise. I don't travel that road anymore either. My condolences to the family of this young man. May you all find peace in time.

  8. If Chicago Heights is charging their customers $3.30 per 1000 gallons, and Hammond is charging Chicago Heights 57.5 cents per 1000 gallons, how the heck was Chicago Heights Water Department operating at a deficit of $461,559 in one year?

  9. As far as the College Bound program, have you looked at the cost to attend a state school? Tuition, Room and Meals cost a pretty penny, not to mention all of the additional fees, such as parking or miscellaneous lab fees associated with many classes. Considering $3,000,000 divided among 60 students equals $50,000, which is $12,500 a year for a 4 year degree, that appears to be about the average costs to attend a state school. Education isn't as cheap as it was in the 70's, which is when I assume you attended and received your 4 year degree for about the cost of 1 semester now.
