  1. Where did you ever hear that JIm Biggs euthanized all of those dogs? Where are you egetting your information from? At the time that JIm Bigs was Commissioner, the Animal Shelter was run by a Board headed by a veterinarian. That Board allotted $500.00 a year for veterinary expenses for all animals, sold dead animals for experimentation, left a burned kitten to suffer in a cage over a three day weekend with no medical attention, e5tc., etc. If you had read the papers when that board was disbanded you would have learned something. We have the documentation, photos and proof of all of the abuse that took place before Commissioner Bob Harper disbanded that Board and attempted to start a no-kill shelter. Commissioner Evans was in office when these abuses took place-ask him how often he had visited the Shelter before the abysmal conditions of the animals were exposed in August of 2011! Please inform yourself before you expose your ignorance to the reading, literate public.

  2. Jim Biggs has been actively involved with animal welfare in Porter County - he and Councilman Dan Whitten were responsible for keeping the pressure and the spotlight on Commissioner John Evans last summer, when more than 75 cats were suffering in a closed room with no ventilation or air-conditioning. During more than a week, the animals shelter and its director knew of the dangers but the Commissioners refused to fix it. It wasn't until Biggs and Whitten began their investigation of shelter practices that John Evans finally fired the Director and hired a competent person. John Evans cares little about animals-so little that he allowed them to live in misery until the cover-up and lies were exposed to the public.
He cares now because of the election--but ask who disbanded the Wildlife Advisory Board after Jim Biggs left office? John Evans, of course. who has millions from the hospital sale sitting in the bank, earning interest, and yet refuses to spend any money except where convenient(like sewers for South Haven, after years of problems for the residents and no relief). John Evans is only interested in himself and in perpetuating his control over Porter county politics. We need fresh air-we need people in office who are really concerned about residents AND animals.
Listen to Dr. reed and vote for JIm Biggs, professional, compassionate and interested in all residents-not just those who support his policies .

  3. Check the Council minutes-Councilman Biggs congratulated Jon Thomas during an open council meeting in February. And your comment that Biggs has made no positive suggestions as to the shelter? Highlights from the Shelter Planners' report (ordered by the Commissioners) was just released to the public a few days ago, although Evans has had it for a while. Isn't it smarter to wait for the expert's opinion before offering your views, or should Jim Biggs just follow John Evans' example and act before getting the facts? Wasn't it on John Evans' watch that the prior board, headed by one of our local vets, euthanized hundreds of animals a year? Photos exist, you know, as well as documentation of the mass euthanasia at the Porter County Animal Shelter. It was pure luck that the new director, Jon Thomas, was hired. Evans made no attempt to advertise publicly, nor did he follow any animal welfare association guidelines in hiring, but by pure luck he found someone who, although unschooled in animal welfare, had the compassion and intelligence to ask questions, to network, and to be willing to learn from the local rescue groups who were concerned about the treatment the animals were getting from the Evans-Adams duo. Thanks god for Dan Whitten , Jim Biggs and the Porter County Council for bringing the Evans-Adams incompetency to the light of day.

  4. DLZ gave money to Evans, Anton insurance gives money to Evans--what other contractors does Mr.Evans have in his pocket? Look at the photos from his fundraiser-he and Mr. Anton sure are friendly. The Commissioners seem to have very different ideas about ethics-I wonder, where's the cancelled check that will prove that Commissioner Adams repaid DLZ' for use of their private plane on her trip to Indy in 2011? Still waiting for that proof, Nancy. Just asking....

  5. Honest and true public servants? Give me a break! Chuck Conover works a only a few hours a week, his wife works for the City of Valparaiso and is a member of the County Council. They have made a living off of county and city taxepayers, and are part of the Valparaiso Republican old guard trying to take over the County Council and the Commissioners. Believe me, Chuck Conover wouldn't be writing a letter in support of John Evans if he wasn't getting something out of it. Costas, Adams, Evans and company have some5hing up their sleeves-and it's not for the good of the county. Mike Heinold and Mark Hoffman, two total newcomers to the political field with nothing to recommend them but their names, are only puppets for the Costas-Adams-Evans show. Remember this if they are elected-and wait for them to propose a county option income tax. J9im Biggs and Jim Polarek are not in this fight for selfish reasons-they are truly trying to improve our county. Fred, you are wrong, wrong, wrong-or you are just another friend of Evans, bought and paid for with favors and contracts.

  6. Dr. McAfee seems to have forgotten when Jim Biggs, as Commissioner, named him to the newly composed Wildlife Management Board and established a Wildlife Sanctuary in Jackson Township. (correction of first paragraph of the preceeding).

  7. DR. McAfee seems to have forgotten that Jim Biggs named him when Biggs, as Commissioner, established the Wildlife Management Board and set the agenda for the Wildlife Sanctuary, donated by the Greggs, In Jackson Township. When John Evans became Commissioner, he disbande4d the Board. Later, of course , McAfee and Evans made up and Evans named him to be part of his new, hand-picked, Wildlife Board. Ask Dr. Larry Reed, who never turns down an urgent request to help an animal in need-her quit that original Board when Commissioner Evans began to manipulate it. And to say that Biggs authorized euthanasia-doesn't Dr. McAfee remember that an Advisory
board ran the shelter until about four years ago, euthanizing hundreds of animals yearly with all of the Commissioners tacit approval? It wasn't until Bob Harper became commissioner that this stopped. and guess what? When Bob left, Nancy Adams was put in charge. If it weren"t for Council President Dan Whitten and Council Member Jim Biggs, many more animals would be dead. Evans only responded to the shelter emergency because Whitten and Biggs made it public, and wouldn't let it go away. Where was Larry McAfee then? If it weren't for Dr. Rachel Jones, those 80 cats would be dead, and if it weren't for the present shelter advisory board, more dogs would be dead. Evans only paid for the Shelter Planners report because he was backed into a corner. Had he any real regard for animals, something would have been done a long time ago. Instead, the present shelter director struggles daily with lack of personnel, and still depends on donations from local citizens and vets. Evans seems to think that paying our tax money for consultants to solve HIS problems means the job is as good as done-but there is never any follow through. He cannot be trusted. He has been coroner, deputy coroner and commissioner for years. It's time for him to return and take care of his business-dealing with those who can no longer object to his tactics and his cronyism-those who pass through his hands on their way to their final resting place. Those of us who are living need to vote for someone who knows how to deal the living-with our everyday problems and those of a developing county. Evans and McAfee need to step aside, and let those who are moved by true co cern for all of the county residents take over. You are done!
