- This policy is a huge mistake. Many administrators wouldn't recognize a good teacher because frankly there is a lack of supervision in most schools. Moreover, many school districts do not care about getting good teachers, they want cheap teachers. They want teachers who will work for pennies and jump through any hoop put in front of them. Quality is not their priority. I work in a high school with no band, no choir, no cooking, sewing, or child development classes, no wood shop, one foreign language program, and only one art teacher. Adding inexperienced, under-educated administrators to the mix will make the situation for low-income schools even worse. Sadly, Arne Duncan's idea of extending school days in low-income schools is no better. If you want good schools you need highly educated teachers and administrators that are supervised and supported by their communities.

- Tony Bennett is an unimaginative, authoritarian bully who only cares about getting money from the federal government. The Times should not give him credit for any positive reforms. All he did was put a gun to the heads of school administrators and said "do something or else." Now the gun is pointed at teachers. Tony Bennett will never get my vote and The Times lost another subscription.
