  1. Gary was included in Chicago to keep the state from taking over O'Hare from the city. Either way, Gary got used and continues to get used. It's only real hope is to break away from the Chicago Airport Authority and align with the Indianapolis Airport Authority. Sure, they will lose the pocket change Chicago throws at them every year but would more than make up for it as Indianapolis would be more willing to invest in its democratic stronghold.

  3. Wow, people can't read. Gun never made it into the school, officer left it at home apparently. The fight was between two girls more than likely fighting over a boy as is the case at most schools. That bit of information comes courtesy of the times competitor who seems to do a better job at relaying the facts. The guard in question wasn't even the one who responded to the fight. Way to go times at race baiting.

  6. Going into year 5 of the Obama administration and 4 deaths. Pretty darn good considering. It is by far the lowest death toll at our embassies since before Carter. Bush 43, saw 53 or so deaths but not one whimper from the public, let alone ignoring intelligence before 9/11 which caused 3000 casualties. Some could argue the era's of Reagan, Bush Sr and Carter were definitely of a different time esp. with he cold war but nevertheless, more deaths at embassies during those administrations than the current one.

  7. Uh, there already is a flat rate, 1% that ALL hoosier homeowners pay, it's part of the Indiana constitution. Homestead is something different. You do away with homestead in Gary, Hammond, EC you have to do away with it everywhere since every homeowner can benefit from homestead. Keep in mind once you get rid of homestead, your property can then be seized by suing parties. Homestead just doesn't reduce the amount of assessed value, it prevents entities outside of Government from taking your house in the event you are sued for any reason and lose. Over 65, military, etc. you get rid of it for one, you get rid of it for all which includes YOU. It just doesn't apply to certain areas or individuals.

Now you do realize North of I80 is mainly steel mills, Miller, part of EC, slither of Hammond and Whiting right? So you basically left out all but a sliver of people.

  8. First, a trauma center is greatly needed in NWI. The minutes added by having to airlift to Chicago and moreso now Indianapolis as the state is tired of sending money to Illinois to pay for NWI's inept ability to cooperate for the greater good could save more lives, help keep our young doctors and other medical personnel to be from leaving the region helping to end the brain drain that is prevalent in Indiana and especially Lake County. Trauma centers for the most part also serve as teaching hospitals which means for a trauma center, there would need to be close access to IU since it's the only med school in the area.

The optional 1% income tax should have been implemented a long time ago. Hoosiers elsewhere really do get tired of Lake County running to the state trough for handouts to pay for things that tax should have been used to pay for. Nothing Lake County does adds any real benefit to the state (just being honest) so why should the Indiana taxpayers fork over their tax dollars to help Lake County when Lake County refuses to do for self.

A port would be a good idea. Don't know why the study needs to be done in all honesty. The airport, while could be an asset in the near future with a lot of help by getting rid of the heavy industry right by it and adding amenities travelers like, would take years to do and a lot of wetlands in the area that have to be protected per the EPA so it makes it problematic. Retooling the airport for Cargo, with 4 lines running straight through the property and almost immediate access to a port could be a gem for not just Gary but all of NWI as prices would be cheaper than Chicago and it would provide jobs to the entire region and add a much needed taxbase (which helps lower your taxes btw Lake County residents). Just look at Burns, which is highly successful, add the rail and air cargo ability, Lake County could really create a niche for itself as a logistical giant but that requires actually cooperating with one another. Add a trauma center and teaching hospital you can then help spur other medical and life science related business to the area esp. right around IUN and IvyTech. Partner with PUC to help create a technology park in its immediate area to spur tech jobs and slowly build up to what the area should be. Home prices increase, quality of life increases (pretty low qol in ALL of Lake County, sorry) and you slowly transform from a strictly industrial area bent on manufacturing to survive to a more diversified economy better able to sustain itself and not be a drag on the state and not be the tail end of the Greater Chicago-Illinois-Indiana-Wisconsin metro area.

  9. And the typical banter continues. You do realize for starters, that forbes ranking, while a joke like most of their lists, actually is culling data from Da Region, not just Gary, it's metro stats for the most part they are looking at. So when they talk about Gary, they are talking about all of you armchair quarterbacks in the burbs as well. You are considered one and the same. That's how metros work.

High poverty cities require a tax base like anywhere else. Abandoned buildings become the norm because there isn't money to tear them down. The mayor during her first year asked for help from the surrounding areas because that's where it has to come from. Re gentrification of the urban core has always been tantamount to a city and sadly, that investment starts from outside that very urban core with those with the means to invest. Look at what NWI is missing, Trauma Center, teaching hospital, jobs in high tech, logistics and life sciences. It's in your best interest to work together by utilizing the assets that are there such as the Lake which Indianapolis would never be able to compete with but since central Indiana already considers you one gigantic clusteryouknowwhat, nothing to worry about because Lake County has the typical can't get there from here mentality and the ever abundant inability to cooperate for the greater good of the area.

LadyG4whatever, education is key. Now I can easily point to everything you said and have the stats to debunk every useless diatribe you've spouted. You sound young and I can tell you, Gary today is nothing like Gary of the early 90's. It's not even close. You want bad, Gary in the 90's was it. The crime rate of the city today while high is no where near that of the 90's. Also, Gary isn't the murder capital of the world, how can it be, it's not even the murder capital of the US and with a population under 100k, doesn't even get factored in to the equation since it's a population base of 100k.
