  1. I don't understand why anyone is complaining. Last fall there was an election and the same people got voted in. They were in favor of the referendum before the election so what makes you think they changed their minds. If you voted for them, don't complain.

The referendum will pass if the Republican machine wants it to pass. Considering all the school board members are Reps, the machine must be in favor of it, so it will pass. They may have to resort to scare tactics and lies but will get through. All things considered, the Munster Reps seem more like the Lake County Dems.

  2. Before anyone votes on the Munster School Referendum I think we should know the answers to these questions:
1.Gov. Pence promised more money for education during this legislative session. Will Munster get enough funding where the referendum isn’t needed?
2.Lake County is going to pass the Option Income Tax of at least 1.5%. .8% goes towards property relief. How will the rest of the money be used? Each taxing entity is eligible to receive some of revenue to include schools.
3.How much money has the Munster TIF districts taken away from the schools? The TIF districts take away from all other taxing entities. The Times reported the TIF raised over $10M for the town. Considering 60% (at least it used to be. Correct if wrong) of property taxes goes towards the schools, did the TIF take away $6M from the schools? Remember that the next time you are at Panera or 5 Guys.
4.The School Corp owns 20+ acres in West Lakes. I am sure it’s worth a few million in value. Can that be sold and developed? That would add more houses, thus generating more property tax revenue. What happened to the money when they sold the parcel of land in White Oak Estates?
5.The School Board Members, which are part time, receive health insurance. Are they willing to give that up? That’s probably around $100K. Most of the school board members are eligible for Medicare anyway.
6.How many teachers are collecting both a retirement and a salary? Will letting those teachers go relieve some of the pressure? (Then replace with lower paid teachers.)
7.Do we need another tax? Social Security Tax went up 2% this year. The County Income tax will add at least another 1.5%. So that’s 3.5% in one year. Munster residents are well over the 1% property tax cap. I am around 1.5%. The referendum will put us closer to 2%.
8.For my Republican friends: if you support the referendum, aren’t you supporting tax and spend legislation? If you support the public schools, does that make you a socialist? Republicans are trying their best to get rid of public schools.
9.I have a few ideas on how the school board can raise money without a referendum. Why can’t they think of a few? I mentioned one already. Or hire me as a consultant?
10.When will Munster have a winning football team again? 1988 was the last time they went anywhere.
