  2. Portage resident who works in information technology for the company, has seen turkeys, geese with their goslings and deer in the woods there. As he mentioned the deer, a pair appeared near the trail.

"You don't have to hear the mill noises," he said.

So after almost 50 years of struggle and abuse to those that "wanted picnics, not jobs..." even the steel mill management agree the dunes are better than the mills. Gee, too bad they had to snatch the heart of the dunes to figure that out. These 7,000 acres could have been saved and the jobs absorbed at the existing Lake County mills. Think of what Porter County was like then...

  3. So, we have subsidized these air shows for years whether we knew it or not? How much more could we save if all the information was really available? Start with with looking at ALL the federal employees now making over $ 100,000 per year, the fasting rising category of federal employees. I know of several new grant-funded projects where federal and state bureaucrats travel and spend hours learning what others have already done, then head back to their agencies to plan more meetings. It's time to end these non-productive programs -- like air shows and put people back to work actually doing something for the money.

  4. It is safe to say that anyone familiar with the Gary Airport expected contaminated soil since there were several areas of waste disposal and illegal dumping grounds surrounding the airport. A few months ago when this was 'uncovered' the airport said they were hoping to save money be leaving it even though current state and federal waste regulations should be applied to prevent additional contamination of the groundwater, the Grand Calumet River and even Lake Michigan. The City of Gary should step up and take some responsibility. In addition, the region's environmental groups should be the watchdog on the airport, the cleanup and the river dredging. These public interest groups receive significant state and federal funding to promote the public interest. Aren't we One Region, after all?

  6. This "indicator" report, like most of the others I have seen, do not reflect anything other than spreading more money to those well-connected to write the "report". Then others are asked to donate their time, for free, to comment and correct the errors AFTER THE FACT. I too, would like to see a breakdown of what it cost, who did the work and how it could be so wrong. God forbid that the writer use data from EPA on the existing Toxic Release Inventory or Greenhouse Gas (GHG) inventory: http://ghgdata.epa.gov/ghgp/main.do

  8. It's funny to watch this issue if it it wasn't so sad and wasteful. I think of the term: "The blind leading the blind..."

It's a major reason the state's Solid Waste Districts should be reduced or eliminated. It was a good idea when the purpose was to reduce waste by 50% by 2001, but the reality (according to the new One Region report - Environmental Indicators) is that now they is more waste generated in Lake County than 10 years ago and everyone looks at it as a money maker.
