  1. I, too, wish the Times was as aggressive in its reporting on its own business troubles (parent Lee Enterprises still in bankruptcy and its stock at less than $2 a share for nearly two years) as it is about reporting the continuing problems at the Post-Tribune. The bottom line is both of NWI's daily newspapers are tethered to companies that have been mismanaged, are carrying massive debt loads and whose futures are uncertain.

  4. Indiana - the state where it's more difficult to become a licensed nail technician (someone who does manicures) than it is to become a teacher.

Yep, we have our priorities in order.

  6. Yes, all tax increases should be tied to the percentage increase in Social Security that senior receive. It's not fair that they should be asked to pay for public services like education.

Also, these teachers are paid way too much. Why do we have to hire all these people with college degrees?? A WASTE OF MONEY. They don't teach anything that these kids can't learn on the Internet anyways. And why do we have to pay for their health insurance? Why is that our responsibility? Not Fair. A Waste. Crazy! Please fire these overpaid teachers. I am sure that people in the community will volunteer their time to replace the teachers. We can do just as good a job!!!

  7. By sticking their hand "into the taxpayers pocket" you're implying they're taking money from taxpayers. But if they are working and performing a valuable service, then it's not taking anything. It's being compensated for work performed.

Is the administration in Munster schools bloated? It's an honest question that I don't know the answer to. If it is too large, can someone please post something here about it? Because it's information we should all have prior to election day.

  8. Congratulations on having smart children. But, again, you brought up the sports teams why? Because I must be missing something. Doesn't seem relevant in the least.

  9. Your argument is that increasing diversity is a bad thing, and that it's the result of "political correctness and feel-goodism"? Yeah, all those liberal, politically correct laws against redlining, that's what will "topple" Munster's advantage.

Since you've chosen the name "RegionRefugee," we can assume you've left the area. That's probably a good thing, Hope you took your white hood with you.

  10. Hanlon, why do you call it a "perceived advantage"? Bowman recruits the best players from throughout the largest city in NWI. Both The Times and Post-Trib have columns today that mentioned this in passing, but then brush it off as just the way things are now.

Charter schools are free to pick and choose who they accept. And it appears that if you're an exceptional basketball talent Bowman will find a place for you. Fine, that's the way it is. Too bad for all the other Gary schools, who now have another hurdle to pulling together a nucleolus of talent necessary to compete at a high level.

Congrats to Bowman, which has an incredibly talented group of your men. But NWI sports writers don't seem to grasp that a basketball factory like Bowman fundamentally changes high school basketball in Indiana. How many years until the final four at one or two of the classes is four charter schools facing off?

Maybe the same arguments could be made of places like Noll or Andrean - schools that are not limited by geographic boundaries when enrolling students. But Bowman and other charters are quasi-public entities, so there is not the same tuition hurdle for students. Bowman should be recognized for another accomplishment - the ability to effectively exploit the state's charter school system to build a basketball dynasty.
