I am a shopper of both stores, I work in downtown Chicago and do have access to both which I am grateful for. I will continue to shop at both because they are convenient to me and I support what they are trying to do. That being said, I am also a supporter of local businesses supplying organic, non GMO foods to NWI. To name a few:
Produce Depot in Dyer, IN - do a somewhat decent job of stocking organic produce, of course harder to do in the winter months then summer. I do like they are trying and I do like that they offer in season organic produce, organic meats, organic milk.
Traders Point Creamery - Zionsville, IN. Great tasting organic non homogenized milk. They used to deliver to Produce Depot and no longer do, I think because the order for the store was not large enough. Can be purchased at WF. I have spoken to a customer rep and they say "they have a hard time getting their product into NWI stores". Maybe they should be willing to support smaller businesses trying to sell their product? Maybe if enough of us contact them, they will? attaching link: http://www.tpforganics.com/
Seven Sons Family Farm and Company - Serving IN, IL, and OH. A small family owned Indiana farm offering All-Natural 100% Grass-fed Beef, Free-range Chicken, Turkey, Pork & Farm Fresh Eggs. They have pickup locations in Indiana and Illinois. The closest pickup in NWI is at McShanes in Munster, IN. Visit website: http://www.sevensons.net/products/how-to-buy.htm
These are just a few of the businesses I support as much as possible, and they are green, organic, and local. There are of course many more not listed here. I also support the farmers markets during the spring, summer, and fall months. I would like to say although I applaud the towns for the farmers markets, I want to see more organic produce, less crafts, less linens ( I really don't understand linens being sold at a farmers market). It would be a dream to have a farmers market like the Chicago Green Market in Lincoln Park on Wednesday's and Saturday's, here in NWI. My thought is the towns could get together and put on a really good green organic market with lots of organic vendors instead of just the little individual town farmers markets. (Just my dream).
Anyway, these small farmers and businesses are out there and available to you. You just need to do a little research.
