  1. I'm sitting here wondering if you were trying to be funny or if you are really that ignorant. Given that you make a choice of breaking the law and then trying to denegrate others, I believe it is the latter. A person's last name is a surname.

  2. Why is this even newsworthy? If Martin Luther King Jr were running on the republican ticket, the democrat in that district would still win. Obama's endorsement or not is meaningless

  3. "and their kids are going to school and playing sports in our schools,"

A couple of weeks ago, this paper reported on the sad case of a young Hammond resident murdered in Calumet City who attended school in Harvey. I think you have it reversed.

  4. I have little doubt that the IHSA will still see fit to chastise Harrisburg no matter what evidence shows otherwise. It is not politically correct to not do so. Seton academy should be banned from the state tournament next year for its actions

  5. Interesting to check stories of the game on newspaper sites from outside of the south suburban area or those down near Harrisburg. From what I read up here, it must have been racism that Harrisburg shot more fouls. Other papers talk about how Harrisburg was in trouble early with 9 fouls. A Harrisburg player left the game in the first half with his face scratched up. How come that wasn't reported in any papers up here? Outside this area, they talk about the important foul shots Harrisburg made and the back to back threes they put in that seemed to turn the tide of the game. Up here, Harrisburg did nothing and Seton only lost because of racism. The fact is, Seton was outplayed in the type of physical game that they are used to.

  6. The demand for these charter schools arose from accusations that poor performance was due to uncaring, incompetent teachers who only did their union's bidding. If a public school teacher made a statement like "kids can't be taught if they aren't in school and these parents must be held accountable" they would be pilloried for just making excuses for their poor teaching skills. In a previous story about this school losing its backing from Ball State , an Edison person said that it is not fair to compare its students with those in Griffith and Munster. Why not? According to popular thought failing schools were only a factor of poor teaching and Hammond High should be evaluated equally with any other school now that it has "real"professionals in charge.

  7. Tomorrow we will see the pictures of these darling little angels in their junior high graduation gowns and the claims that they didn't belong to gangs and that they had never been in trouble before. The atrocious comments here are the ones that excuse these criminals saying that we all did something wrong in our youth. If you find other comments offensive it's because people are fed up with this same story day after day. They are tired of seeing tax money thrown into program after program blaming the circumstances of these criminals' lives on everyone else, society, education etc when the real problem lies within the home. There are countless others growing up in abject poverty and other unfortunate circumstances who somehow don't make these kind of choices.

  8. The argument for charter schools was that low student achievement was because of the quality of teachers in the regular school system. If that is the case, then these students at the local charter schools should be working at a comparable level as those in Valpo or Munster. The failure of these charter schools points to the fact that it is a problem of the students after all. Regular public schools are accused of not holding students to higher expectations and that is exactly what you just did in stating that Gary students can't be held to the same standards as elsewhere

  9. Mmmm.-- claims that this is an illegal, discriminatory action taken by the mayor and his minions. Then a statement that there are only two honest, self-thinking councilmen. The vote was not 6-2. The vote was 8-0. Either your two honest councilmen are really mayoral yes men OR this vote was actually an honest effort to responsibly oversee a problem.
