Over stressed taxpayer

  1. There is a way to reduce jail overcrowding at no extra cost to taxpayers. It is Senate Bill 425.
Senate bill 425 will collect thousands, maybe millions of uncollected dollars owed from late surrender fees and redistribute them to several local entities to reduce jail cost, overcrowding and court operation expense at no cost to taxpayers!

These funds are currently rarely collected but are guaranteed paid by the Indiana Department of Insurance. So why are they not collected? Well, the answer is simple.
The funds are not collected because local courts get nothing from ordering the funds collected; therefore, thousands or millions of dollars that could be used for local use are lost. However, Senate Bill 425 changes this.

SB 425 accomplishes this by incentivizing local courts to collect these funds when due, by giving them a share to reduce their operating cost, fund diversion programs or to extradite a defendant.

Additionally, SB425 will reduce jail overcrowding and jail cost, by funding electronic monitoring programs for indigents to help reduce jail overcrowding and cost at no expense to taxpayers.

Therefore, there is a way to help Porter County jail and other jails and counties across the state.

Call your local state legislator and ask them to voice their support for SB 425 to Senator Michael Young Chairman of Corrections & Criminal Law Committee.
