  1. Calumet Township has a long history of screwing Griffith residents to help Gary residents. That has to stop. While I'm sure many township trustees are honest people, I do not trust Mary Elgin. Given her history as an official with the United Steelworkers, I believe she has ulterior motives and is not capable of honestly managing Calumet Township.

  2. Calling for a legislative committee study is a typical liberal solution to a problem. By "studying" the problem, nothing is done but it looks like the legislators are busy trying to solve our problems. Go ahead and do another study about Calumet Township management (which is currently being done by a former United Steelworkers official) BUT GET GRIFFITH OUT OF THE TOWNSHIP NOW.

  3. I agree with Amy's article. I'm retired but not yet eligible for Medicare. My health insurance costs have gone up over 150% in the last three years. When I ask why, I'm told it's because of the anticipated increase in costs due to the new health care law (Obamacare). That's outrageous and I can't do anything about it.

Even more disturbing is that I have regularly voted for Pete Visclosky. I believe that on balance, he has done good things for our region while in Washington. However, he voted FOR the new health care law and makes no apology for that. What can we do?

  4. No surprise that a former USW Local 1010 union official has a bloated payroll. She can blame the former trustee for having a larger staff, but that doesn't excuse the fact that her staff is still significantly higher than it should be. She learned about wasting someone else's money when she was the treasurer at Local 1010.

  5. Just do the math and you'll see that Griffith is getting screwed regardless of what Mary Elgin says. Griffith pays in approximately $175 per person for Calumet Township and gets back about $0.65 per person. Gary pays in about $90 per person and gets back $175 per person!!! That means Griffith's money is simply being given out to Gary. Not fair.

Also, Mary Elgin comes from the United Steelworkers Local 1010 and I wouldn't trust her to manage a budget for my dog.

  6. People, calm down. There are good and bad people everywhere, including the unions. What you may not see is the selfishness of the people that run the unions. They are not interested in helping their workers UNLESS IT HELPS THE UNION. They absolutely do not care about the fallout from their narrow minded and selfish decisions. One small union goes on strike and shuts down the construction work at the I-65/I-94 interchange. They were already making over $30 per hour with benefits, but they literally shut down that job for MORE. The workers blindly followed the union leaders recommendations and went out on strike. Union "supporters" ripped down a tent in Lansing, Michigan even though there were handicapped people inside the tent. Selfish. Look for that motive whenever you hear the unions.

  7. I agree with your logic and also endorse Romney. Just one question. Why didn't the headline for this article say "We Endorse Romney" instead of "Run the Nation Like Massachusetts"? Are you embarrassed by your choice?
