The new science of epigenetics helps us to understand how any environmental cue – any person, place or thing – can influence how our genes are expressed. Even if our parents or grandparents lived long, addiction-free lives, when you continuously fall prey to addictive substances and behaviors, this changes our gene expression. And this altered gene expression is passed on to our children. Our addictions become theirs.
The cutting edge scientific study of food addiction, Food and Addiction: A Comprehensive Handbook, edited by Kelly D. Brownwell & Mark S. Gold, has just been published for the medical community and I've just published the first holistic approach, combing diet, exercise and regenerating those crucial neural transmitters, to food addiction, The Hunger Fix. Perhaps this will be the vanguard to bringing all addictions into the same kind of general respect as other chronic conditions such as epilepsy, asthma or arthritis -- illnesses that are not faults but facts to be dealt seriously with.
