  1. Mark55 is right. The addict's brain is a quiet space compared to the dopamine activity of the non-addict's brain. (Dopamine is a neural transmitter associated with cognition, motivation, punishment, reward, sleep, mood, attention, learning, memory and sexual gratification. Dopamine is therefore believed to provide a teaching signal to parts of the brain responsible for acquiring new behavior.)

The new science of epigenetics helps us to understand how any environmental cue – any person, place or thing – can influence how our genes are expressed. Even if our parents or grandparents lived long, addiction-free lives, when you continuously fall prey to addictive substances and behaviors, this changes our gene expression. And this altered gene expression is passed on to our children. Our addictions become theirs.

The cutting edge scientific study of food addiction, Food and Addiction: A Comprehensive Handbook, edited by Kelly D. Brownwell & Mark S. Gold, has just been published for the medical community and I've just published the first holistic approach, combing diet, exercise and regenerating those crucial neural transmitters, to food addiction, The Hunger Fix. However, aside from the issues of weight loss in THF, the information has been picked up in the addiction community for the way it applies to alcohol, gambling, drugs and other compulsions.

At least food addiction promises to be a medical condition, best handled by informed internists, psychiatric/psychological professionals and enlightened nutritionists (it's not just reducing calories, but substituting brain-stimulating calories instead). Perhaps this will be the vanguard to bringing all addictions into the same kind of general respect as other chronic conditions such as epilepsy, asthma or arthritis -- illnesses that are not faults but facts to be dealt seriously with.
