  1. I think it is priceless that half of the commenters believe that the committee voted to scrap the A-F grading FOR STUDENTS.

  2. But, to continue your allegory, if Magic had 30 triple-doubles in a season, then drops slightly to 25 the next season, the league would not say that he is a sub-par player! He'd still be head and shoulders above his peers. The state's system penalizes a school that already functions at a high level and it should be scrapped. Kudos to the committee for recognizing it.

  3. This from the party that forces women to get invasive ultrasounds before receiving an abortion. Yep- no coercion there.
February 14, 2013 11:58 am on GUEST COMMENTARY: Obamacare tramples Americans' right to conscience
  4. This is appropriate, seeing as how the Senators believe it is still 1974. There are other essential cognitive development steps- algebra, economics, history, art, biology and music that have time taken away from them because a teacher has to instruct kids how to make squiggly lines on paper (a skill that has zero application in the real world since 1996.)
February 05, 2013 4:04 pm on Senators endorse requirement to teach cursive handwriting
  5. Enough with the "school budgets are bloated" concept. Budget most directly correlates to class size. Anyone with a kid in school knows that the average class size has gone up by 5-7 students over the last three years. 30+ kids per class is the norm. Every grade is operating one or two teacher short, throughout the district. You could cut every administrator in the district and you'd still fall way short of paying for 20 teachers. You can get by for 2-3 years at these levels, but over the course of 5 years, there will be a drastic decrease in performance out of these kids.

  6. "our highly successful public charter schools". Yes, they are so successful that 7 of them recently had their sponsorship terminated and will close their doors. But to the bass-ackward scholars behind charter schools- this is an indication that the system works. "We close the failing schools" is their talking point- which completely avoids the fact that they promoted charters as the alternative that would fix the failing school network.

  7. The mom was armed to the teeth. How'd that work out for her?

  8. Everyone who is against the enactment of sensible gun laws either because "it won't help" or "its not the real problem": do us a favor and just state your opposition in the following manor:
"I want it to be easy for a mentally unstable person to purchase weapons that easily kill large numbers of people". Its so much more honest than the same old talking points. Just put it out there. And don't talk about the background checks currently in place- they are a joke.

  9. Get ready to hear your friends and neighbors call you every name in the book because you want decent schools. You're gonna come out of this feeling a lot worse about your community. Sense of community, meet modern day GOP. Good luck!
December 13, 2012 1:24 pm on Union Township School Board OKs referendum
  10. In military spending, we outspend the next 19 countries combined. We spend 6x as much as China. There is no one that is remotely prepared to confront the US in a conventional war.
December 05, 2012 8:16 am on DOUG ROSS: Amid talk of military's cost, remember peace is fragile
