  1. two words --> SECTION 8.

    honestly, what did the folks of Merrillville expect when the floods began into Merrillville in government subsidized housing? Who gets the govt to pay for their housing? Mostly, black people, single moms on welfare. Homes without fathers, mothers without the morals or means to keep their kids in line, and a black culture that continues, to their detriment, to glamourize and glorify the thug lifestyle. Fools. You're killing your own people.

  2. SO heartbreaking! I feel for the pastor and his dwindling congregation, and I fear that we'll be seeing more of this in years to come, as young parents stop attending church w/ their kids, and eventually, the members fade. But its important to note that this isn't happening in "all Protestant churches" but moreso in the mainline denominations (Presbyterian, UCC, United Methodist, Episcopal, etc) and also smaller, independent Bible or non-denominational churches. Why? Because megachurches come in with their fresh, new approach and many people leave their dying little churches ("jumping ship" you might say) and get on the larger "ship" where there seems to be more life. Here's what I'd like to see: I'd like to see mainline denominations stop giving up on these old churches. I'd like to see them begin revitalization and outreach teams -- church consultants, so to speak -- who could come into dying churches and lend spiritual, and stragetic expertise to bring new life and to bring in new congregants, to churches that already exist. AND, I'd like to see megachurches (dare I name them? There's on on Broadway in Crown Point, and another in Dyer -- both have "branches" in other communities) stop swooping into neighborhoods that already have strugging congregations and setting up their own places. Why don't these megachurches help their struggling brothers and sisters, and respect the denominational roots of others? Their intention is surely to go in and share the Gospel, and that's cool, but too often these megachurches seem to do it in a heavy-handed "we know best, time to move aside, old churches" manner that I find unChristian and disrespectful to those who have gone before them.

  3. Rich James, you write: “Republicans say there are alternatives to abortion, but when a single mother … needs help, good luck in finding a Republican to lend a helping hand.”
    Rich, your opinion is your own, but your claims are untrue. Most Republicans value life – yes, the life of the unborn child. Yes, abortion is legal, but surely you can understand how people who see it as murder would aim to limit it, if not altogether stop it.
    Here’s where your claim is wrong: many folks who are pro-life (Republican and/or Democrat) support government programs to help single moms. Better yet, they are part of Christian ministries and non-profits that help these women and their precious kids.
    Would that you had done your homework to find and celebrate these good works rather than parroting worn-out liberal lies. I respectfully challenge you to do just that: as a journalist, why not do some investigation to see the sorts of help available. I think you may be surprised.
    Finally, you write that “Republicans just don’t get it … its called compassion.” Hmmm, and tell me sir, just how compassionate is the killing of a child in its mother’s womb? Just how compassionate are late-term abortions with all of their butchery? And if Republicans—or anyone—lose elections or public opinion because they try to end the killing of unborn babies, fine. Perhaps they know the larger truth that the only opinion that matters in the end is our Creator’s.

  7. I hope they leave US 20 and 12 alone! I know some clean up may need to be done, but my fear is that they're going to suburbanize it, Walmart-ize it, make it an ugy commercial stretch filled with crowds and traffic and stoplights.
    The reason I love to travel on 20 and 12 is because of its emptiness and peace. Its like going back in time 40 years and getting away from all the suburban sprawl. Sigh...

  8. Sad, but this is an easy one. Chalk one up for liberal welfare state. Cal City and surrounding hoods are filled with folks on welfare and Section 8. Yes, black folks.
    So, we get thugs and crime and all the whites fleeing. And rightly so when you're scared you might get robbed or killed. Shame what has happened to the black population at the hands of liberals who continue to keep them under their thumbs, and under the dignity that they might have if they were independent, working, and truly free.
