  2. I think Mrs. Sleight made the right decision considering the news was printed in the paper before the school even found out what was happening.

  6. WOW. It's so true, but it's everyday life in many schools. Remember when the above kids mentioned were the minority, not the majority?

  7. Sylvan monies comes from Title I funds issued by the state. The reasons vary why a school is given these funds. The tutoring is free to students. Of course there is a limited number of students who can receive the services, therefore teachers pick the students who have the greatest need.

  10. Most charter schools are ran by non-profits. They are set up because of a need for a better education in an specific area, in this case Gary. I am a charter school teacher and I have seen the product of some public schools. Most are 1-2 grade levels behind and have been pushed through and then we (charter schools) are left to work our butts off to catch them up AND deal with their discipline issues because they were kicked out of a public school. Hence the poor grades.

Does anyone fully understand how schools are graded? Here's a short version: Say you have 300 kids and 150 pass the ISTEP. The following year in order to show improvement 225 kids have to pass the ISTEP. Near impossible feat, especially when 100 new kids show up every year and are below grade level. Oh, it's not impossible if you cheat on the state tests though.

PS We all know the standardized tests are culturally biased and low socioeconomic classes are meant to fail.

General public schools, private schools, and charter schools all have people who put the kids first and work very hard to help them achieve and grow. Too bad the public has to rag on the logistics. Everyone needs something to complain about. Let's put kids first! I see hope with Ritz and say adios to Tony Bennett, who started most of this mess.
