- Remember the apartments on the southside of Hammond. It was a haven for criminals and a drain on the Hammond Police Department. The Mansards is Griffith's version. There are gangs of teens roaming the Mansards damaging property and setting fires. Tenants are afraid to confront them or call the police expecting retaliation, and the management does nothing. Griffith needs to follow Hammond's lead and have the property condemned, vacated, and torn down.

- I get so tired of reading all the negative comments regarding the mayor. Have any of you been in a Hammond library in the last 10 years. I have and long before this mayor ever took office. The library was deplorable then and is even worse now. It simple has never been able to keep up with the county system. Blame it on funding or mismanagement, but stop blaming the mayor. And, be honest admit that in today's electronic society people don't read books anymore. They download them via the internet to an electronic reading device. The sole purpose of libraries today is researching volumns that aren't available electronically. And while the county library offers an abundance of research material, the Hammond Public Library doesn't. As soon as I moved to Hammond, I had to obtain a Hammond resident Lake County Library card because I wasn't willing to give up use of the county library.

- Hammond, East Chicago, and Gary should have been smart 30 years ago when they were invited to join the county library system and said YES! Whenever I need to do any research I go to one of the county libraries. The Hammond libraries are terrible. The library board said it needed funds to upgrade the computer system, well instead of funding the upgrade fund the change to the county computer system. Give the residents of Hammond access to a better library.

- This is because the government told the owners of the apartment complex that they had to start accepting residents who qualified for subsidized housing. Just like Gary, the good people moved out and the trash was left.

- Lake County collects the property taxes and then sends the funds to Indianapolis, the state then takes what they consider to be their share and sends some bank to Lake County. Since the state imposed the levy the amount returned to the county has been minimal. We discuss passing an income tax so the state will give the county the money it is rightfully entitled to. We file a lawsuit against the state claiming that the levy is illegal. I have a better idea. Just don't send the state the money in the first place. Maybe the state should have less money to operate and look for ways to limit spending like all the governmental agencies in Lake County have been forced to do.

- If starting the starting salary for teachers in Chicago is $50,000 and they work 2000 hours during the year, and we know they don't, they are making $25.00 per hour. That may seem like too little to pay those who are responsibile for educating the future of our country, or too much when the average middle class worker is making about $15 per hour. But, the real issue is that regardless of who you want to blame: students, parents, teachers or administrators, the educational system in Chicago is broken. Each year very few students are lucky enough to win the lottery and be enrolled in one of the elite schools in the city, What's truly sad about this is that the type of educational opportunities that are available at these elite schools should be available at all schools. I certainly don't claim to have answers to the educational problems facing our country, but I am pretty certain that paying higher salaries isn't going to solve the problem. Administrators, teachers, parents, and even students need to have some input into developing a teacher evaluation system that is fair and equatible, with the state providing an outline of requirements but the local districts need to establish and implement their own evaluation criteria.

-
- It isn't a transportation issue that keeps people from commuting from Chicago to NWI for employment. It's MONEY. Jobs in Chicago pay 15-20% than the same in NWI. I commute to Chicago because I am paid 20% more there to do the exact same job I was doing in NWI, and that's taking into consideration additional travel time and expense. I didn't move to Chicago the cost of living is higher, and I am not an apartment dweller.
