  1. Charles Nafus' mother worked for State Representative Karen Talian in her private law office. That law firm got him every break possible as a juvenile in Porter County. He had multiple drug and theft charges. The residential facility where he was placed recommended he go to Logansport for DOC diagnostics, but Porter County Juvenile said no, and he was released (the cost for the same would have been taken out of their budget). The same people are the ones that washed their hands of this teen. If real treatment means money from their budget, Porter County Juvenile turns it down, but can afford for multiple staff members to go to Las Vegas for a convention last year (rather than send one to return to train others). Now Nafus is in the Lake County system facing reality and his mom is posting on his Facebook asking for people to put money on his commissary.

  2. The teen was waived to adult from juvenile for this case when the juvenile system washed their hands after miserably failing to help her. Yet, she is now expected to accept responsibility of an adult after being basically raised in the juvenile detention system in Porter County. Perhaps if she'd received proper treatment rather than labeled and punished through the juvenile system, she'd be on proper medication and receiving counseling to control compulsive behavior. Yes, what she did is completely wrong. Yes, she deserves punishment. However, at her age, the system needs to look at what needs to be done to get her on the right course, not locked up with hardened criminal to learn worst behavior, especially now that the Indiana DOC has removed educational programs. It's futile to lock her up for years and release her uneducated with no life skills. Why is there a drug test when no drug charges applied? Again, let's just label everyone a drug addict and get more funding for the PACT office to build a new facility and hire more. Get her real help.

  3. A 7th grader is a victim. PERIOD. Whether she consented or not, is not the issue. She is below the age of 14. It's not statutory rape, it's child molestation. Had either one of these men been over the age of 21, it would be a Class A Felony. She was obviously too young to realize the type of idiots she was involved with and her family should have questioned her whereabouts. (Not blaming the parents, but who else did she have to protect her?) I just wonder how many others there were besides these two and why Lake County didn't file charges prior to Porter County getting involved. It's also confusing as I believe Nafus was being held at Porter County Jail for charges that stemmed from a purse snatching at the Portage Wal Mart last year (not the Hobart case) and wasn't released until September (she claimed she was with him in August). Bogdan was also out on bond in Lake County for the purse snatching case that the girl (and Nafus) allegedly participated.

  4. Sounds like Ernest T. Bass left Mayberry and came to Porter County.

  5. Anyone that knows Eric also knows above anything, he has heart. Read The Times article from October 2011 http://www.nwitimes.com/sports/high-school/football/rizley-pays-tribute-to-father-with-game-winning-play/article_146ac4a2-b3e7-58c2-a809-186ce4bbf0b0.html --- He is not a bad kid.

  6. So, what, if anything has been done to file charges against the person(s) that burglarized Rizley's home taking an Xbox, headsets and a laptop? That is the thief that Eric was generally venting over. Let's hope that IF and when this culprit is apprehended, the Portage Police think to send out a sensational press release as well. Eric is guilty of poor judgment in putting into written words what anyone would say after being the victim of a crime of this type, especially when other family members are hurt as well.

Charges like those brought against Eric Rizley do nothing but bring down our real estate values even more due to the crime statistics and make money for the court system. Hopefully Eric learns from this.

Portage residents should receive the same attention to thefts as Wal-Mart does from its police force.

  7. Eric comes from a very good, supportive family. He grew up with a father who coached every sport and a mother who never missed watching a game or practice and worked concession when her sons weren't playing. He was venting and crossed the Facebook line with his posts. There were no specific persons targeted. If you had seen his entire page and prior posts, you'd know these referenced posts were taken out of context. He was clearly having a bad day with things going wrong and vented. The police should have assessed the situation and told him to delete the posts, not use this kid to make a statement. Eric's father passed away a couple years ago and his family certainly doesn't need to be dragged through the court system. I'm not condoning the marijuana smoking, but obviously he had found a means to calm down and relax.
