  1. That new roundabout is going to take a traffic inconvenience and turn it into a traffic DISASTER! Unfortunately, Valpo will never recover from all the roundabouts that your mayor has inflicted upon you. Businesses are leaving and consumers are avoiding Valpo like the plague is has become!!!

  2. Wow, I can't believe they are FINALLY going to fix this problem. When my sister was pregnant 24 years ago the sewage backed up into her basement. She complained about the problem at that time and was promised it would be fixed then. So glad they are "eager" to get it fixed so quickly! Way to go Mayor! So glad you were able to squeeze this little problem in between all those important round-a-bouts that you receive all the kick-backs on!!!!

  3. He's a typical bully and if he's not stopped he will most likely kill her. Unfortunately, if she files charges against him they will give her an "Order of Protection" that tells him he cannot come within so many feet of her and they will put him back on the street. He'll violate the Order and kill her anyway because he just doesn't get that he doesn't have the right to harm her. He most likely learned it from his father too.

Instead of just putting these dirtbags back on the street they need to put them mandatory treatment for their abusive behavior and keep them locked up until they prove that they have been cured. A doctor will need to sign off on them too. If they become abusive again after that -- I say lock them up and throw away the key!

  4. I can't believe the State would allow Costas to include roundabouts on 30, but I guess he needs the kickback money to fund his next trip to China. It does seem like Valpo suddenly has a lot of money for "improvements" and most of them include at least one roundabout. I do use the first one, but the one on Vale Park & Silhavy is such a mess that I avoid that one at all costs! The first one is bad enough with people not knowing how to use it -- either trying to wait too long to get on, or jumping on too quickly and cutting off others. Drivers don't understand what YIELD means!

  5. If we made it more difficult for these individuals to get assault weapons it may be possible to save some lives. However, having someone buzz or ring a bell to get into a school, then show a driver's license isn't going to stop this from happening. These are not career criminals that suddenly decide to kill people. These are people who snap, then plan the assault carefully in advance and they usually have no record at all, no one ever thought they would do it, and they have legally purchased the assault weapons they use. Last Friday the guy used weapons that his mother legally purchased. Unfortunately, she was not thinking clearly when she purchased them with her son living there. The real change needs to be in insurance coverages. Mental health must be covered, especially for our children and young adults. Too often parents give up because they can't get help for their kids and then we as a society blame them for not getting help for their kid, but in reality the system failed the parents and the kid too. Let's make some changes that really mean something.

  6. Some of you didn't read the article very well. You are talking about elementary education, but the article states that these professionals would only be allowed to teach their subject areas in middle or high schools. I also think you are forgetting that with a college degree comes advanced education and the individuals must prove they know the subject before they can teach it. Unfortunately, in our colleges the professors often know the subject quite well, but they cannot actually TEACH. That is what we need to be careful about before allowing anyone to walk into any classroom -- can they teach. There are some wonderful college professors with no formal teaching education and some high school teachers who are not so effective. Just because you know the subject doesn't mean you know how to teach it.

  7. You shouldn't pick on the Mayor for wanting another roundabout. He's getting a lot of kickbacks on those roundabouts! It won't be long until he's managed to do away with every traffic light in Valpo! There will be roundabouts at every intersection and we'll never have to stop! Except when some idiot runs into us on one of those roundabouts because they don't understand how to use them. Maybe they can design a few more like the one at Silhavy & Vale Park -- I swear whoever designed that one had to be under the influence of something. Just one more reason to AVOID Valparaiso!!!

  8. I've seen truckers turn left on red at that light many times too because they are going too fast. Or, at least that is their excuse. Of course it's too late when someone ends up dead because they are trying to turn too fast, or take a ramp too fast. The exit off 49 onto east bound 30 in Valpo is a sharp turn and when truckers take it too fast they turn over. Maybe one way to get truckers to slow down on left turns & ramps would be to also make them pay for the cleanup as in the situation last night where the liquid had to be transferred. I don't think the company he works for would be so happy about him driving so fast then, not to mention the cost of the fines.

  9. I've had a lot of idiots sitting too close to my bumper lately too so I'm glad they are finally going to do something about that. However, in this state there is a law that if you need to use your wipers (i.e. rain or snow) then you need to have your headlights on. This morning I lost count of the number of people without lights on driving in the DARK!!!! It wasn't raining, but it was so cloudy that it was just dark out. I've also noticed a lot of people not turning them on at night after dark. I'm not sure what the problem is, if they think their vehicle will automatically turn the lights on for them or what, but as a society we are not taking responsibility for our own actions. That means if the prisoner took the seatbelt off after the vehicle was in motion, that is not the officer's responsibility. If the driver of the pickup did not have lights on he should also be cited for the violation. For those of you making comments about the officer going around the grain truck, how many of you have never gone around a slow moving farm vehicle? Right! Now shut up when you have nothing intelligent to say. Police officers put their lives on the line every day. For every jerk wearing a badge there are 50 more who are not jerks.

  10. Two men escaped less than a year ago and 2 more have now escaped from this facility and there are "plans" to construct a new building? The current facility is "semi-secure" which obviously means these men can simply come and go as they please. Maybe they need to change the rules AND the facility at the same time. First, put some razor wire around the building to deter escapes. Second, anyone that tries to escape & gets caught goes back to prison and serves their FULL sentence. That means no time off for "good" behavior!

I was reading an article about how a girl murdered a woman 27 years ago, received a 60 yr sentence, and with time off for "good" behavior will be released in a year. I guess that must be the "new" math because my understanding of prisoners getting 1 day off for each day served would mean they would have to serve at least half their sentence and 27 + 1 = 28, not 30. Imagine if criminals actually had to serve their full sentence -- most of them wouldn't survive!
