  1. p. 12 "There we no higher positions of power for a woman to sit in those seats before an adoring crowd of thousands that had come to listen to their pastor preach the thundering messages that made him nationally famous."

    p. 12 ".....that infamousand ongoing liaison."

Your story is told from your point of view. When I read the account of how you felt JS was humiliated by being made to wear a gun belt too big for him (a gift from JH)...you magnify something out of proportion. Since this happened very early in your book, along with the aforementioned typos, it lessens your credibility in my mind. That's all.

  2. I did start to read Kaifetz' book, and found the numerous grammatical and typographical errors to be too distracting, along with his own obviously biased slant. We all see the world through our own lenses...

That aside, it is absolutely true that the staff at FBC Hammond is very, very culpable. The attitude there is, "Follow your leaders and ask no questions about anything. To ask questions is to be rebellious, and rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft."

So, with that message being piped in through every Sunday School class and every sermon, one can see how Jack Schaap was allowed to thrive.

It's very, very warped and sad!

  3. Speaking as a member of the church in question, I'd like to agree with one poster who pointed out that for a congregation that claims membership of 20,000, 140 letters (a number quoted in at least one of the articles on this story) is a mere pittance. Many of us would not write any sort of a letter of support for this man. You might wonder why we stay members of this church....it can best be explained thusly: We are caught between the ideal of what this church could be and the reality of what it is, and it is very hard to know when to give up dreaming and praying for the former and facing the fact of the latter. Time will tell. But for Jack Schaap to only look at the situation from his own point of view is very telling. The damage he inflicted goes far beyond what anyone can fully realize.

  4. "It's as close to Broadway as you can get, with a great ticket price."

Having been to Broadway and having been a New Yorker for many years before being transferred here...I can assure you that someone needs a reality check!

  5. "The father of the boy who fired the slingshot made his son tell officers the truth and worked things out with the victims to pay for their damages."

Rather refreshing, someone who owns up to a situation and deals with it.

  6. Let's all admit that we know teachers who are incompetent. Teachers who "phone it in" and do NO prep whatsoever. I am personally aware of 4 teachers who are truly inept and incompetent. One is near retirement, two are in mid-career, and one is relatively new to the job. I look at these people, as a self-employed member of the private sector who has to hustle in every dime -- I look at these incompetent people who get full health care benefits, paid days off, summers free, and a pension for life at my expense and yes, it makes me livid. Colors my whole opinion of the 'teaching' profession. I also see kids who can't read or write a decent sentence, who have no CLUE as to the rigors of a proper education, and who have little or no ability to use reason, logic, planning, or discipline in their lives. The problem is incredibly multi-faceted: There are incompetent teachers, inept and redundant administrators, students who revel in and celebrate ignorance, and families that do nothing to nurture & support children as future members of society. My own sentiment is that the public school system IS a failure. It is also tremendously bloated. It is painful to trim the fat, but it must be trimmed.
