Elementary school aged children are not responsible for getting themselves up and to school. That is what a parent does!
If there is a problem, the PARENT needs to work with the school and let them know. That is what the "Project Attend" is all about. Bottom line is children do need to go to school and become responsible members of society. And responsible parents know this and make it a priority to do what is in the best interest of their children. From the information in this article, this doesn't appear to be the case, but there may, or may not be more to the story.
And.....this is not just a few days. My son is in high school and if he misses 2 - 3 days in a semester, I get a letter and he gets called down to the office to make sure he knows that if he misses too many days (6 I think is all they can miss per semester) he won't get credit for the semester.
Whether or not there is a serious problem with the mother's parenting cannot be fully determined by this article. But there does have to be some systems in place to ensure that children are safe and being cared for responsibly. Missing that many days from school is a HUGE red flag and it would be irresponsible not to investigate. Additionally, the mother's seemingly lack a cooperation makes matters worse. I say "Good job" to the authorities that are not dropping the ball here. If the mother can sit down and explain things and prove that the child is properly being cared for, THEN DO IT! Until then, someone has to be on the child's side!
