  1. The incentive for all the library workers that I have dealt with has always been to do the best job possible and find me WHATEVER I have asked for in the quickest time and with the resources they had available. One person's griping in the newspaper instead of contacting whatever library was finding the material is hardly a true statement of how well a liibrary is run. If you want a solution to a problem you contact the place that can help solve it. Last I heard the newspaper can't find the materials she wanted.

  3. Lake County has 7 library districts..it's true.Lake County also has 7.5% of the population in Indiana. Why shouldn't they have that many library districts? Hammond and Gary are also the 5th and 6th largest cities in Indiana. Why shouldn't they have city libraries? If their cities are larger than 75 COUNTIES (of the 90+) in Indiana it makes sense for them to have a library system.

Merging SMALL libraries makes sense. Counties with smaller populations should probably not have more than one library in the county. But Lake County and the Library Districts in Lake County are not for the most part small.

Merging would great an even larger library district. Larger is not always better. Sometimes it's just larger.

  4. Good point. How it would affect the current Lake County system doesn't seem to matter.

  5. When libraries only get around 2 cents from every $100 paid in taxes do you really think this would be much of a saving? REALLY! You want a savings on taxes you have to deal with the school administrators. I'll let you in on a big secret...School Admininstrator make a lot more money than Library Adminstrators. Check your tax bill. Maybe you think it is easier to go after libraries but I'll tell you something else..library uers are literate and they understand the finances. They know that there is no savings on taxes under consolidation. All that happens it moves from one agency (libraries) to other agencies (Mayors). Hammond you may pay less for a library but McDermott will still make sure your taxes remain the same. People that use the library can and will write to their legislators and will fight the battle. Plus they will have their facts straight. They won't make statements on a radio station that are untrue.

  6. Internet is priceless but it also has a price which some people can't afford. Where do the currently unemployed go to file for unemployment? Government says you have to file online. You need to have a computer and internet to file. Libraries help those that can't afford what you can. Libraries level the playing field and allow EVEN THE HOMELESS access to information both in print and on the internet, By the way I would check whether you got the right answer from the internet Fast Ed. It's great for trivia but when it comes to accuracy it's not always correct. Come to the library sometime and you will see all ages but most importantly you will see people that need the services of the library. Don't deny them because you use the internet for everything. By the way do you buy every book you want to read. Oh that's right you only read the internet.

  7. You really have to be joking. The internet doesn't have everything..only about 8% of the world's knowledge. 2. The interrnet can't be a storyteller and tell stories to children in preschool story time. 3. The internet can't provide a physical place for community groups to meet.

  8. Over 300,000 taxpayers would be affected by a merger and there are so few comments. When they say taxes will go up a few cents that means per $100,000 of the value of your property. Since we have a tax cap that means some other governmental agency in Munster, St John, etc won't get those few cents because they would go to the County Library for a merger and those taxes would never go away. A few cents is a 25% increase in library taxes for areas like Black Oak and Lake Station. IS THAT FAIR? We can only collect so much money in the county because of what we all voted for...TAX CAPS.

  9. If you won't have money after June shouldn't you be cutting your expenses in half NOW. Seems like you can only afford 1/2 your staff. Sounds like even if they merge the County can't afford all the staff or that large building in downtown. Will McDermott pay off the 7 million debt on the building that should never have been remodeled.
So which government official "forced" the library to spend money on that downtown building...I think i remember it was someone related to McDermott???

  10. How true. When you point a finger there are three fingers pointing back at you?
Watch out McDermott someone might make it their top legislative priority to investigate your bookkeeping "errors".
