  1. Someone once told my wife and I that we were living the American dream. She is a teacher, and I am a firefighter. The truth is that we have been living in a nightmare. She has been on a pay-freeze for the past four years, and I haven't had a raise in nine. People in positions of leadership should not ask for others to walk through the muck unless they are knee deep in it themselves. To give yourself a raise, and then ask your staff to "hang in there" is appauling to say the least. This happened on our Fire Dept as well when our Chief quietly accepted a raise so that his salary was at par with some others in the city. What a great way to boost morale. I hope that your new found money can buy you some respect because there is no doubt that what you had has vanished along with your credibility.

  2. It's my understanding that the Budgets were submitted, and accepted by Mayor Copeland. That being said, it makes it difficult for one to believe that his decision was based on the city's financial woes. There was no discussion of the changes, and the manner in which they were presented to the pubic servants was not only unprofessional, but damaging to their already low morale. Mayor Copeland's novice attempt to gain control of the city has only shown us how little he knows about politics, people, and simple addition & subtraction.

  3. I don't comment often, but I work in public safety in an area that is active with violence. While it is always tragic, it isn't always gang related. We shouldn't assume that these kids are in a gang anymore than assuming that an ex-girlfriend was to blame. What ever the reason, we should all be thankful that no one was hurt, and they were all aprehended....and as far as the gun jamming....sounds like an act of God to me. We should be thankful for that as well.

  4. I can recall sitting in heavy traffic at an intersection in Highland one day when one of Prompt's Supervisors decided that his need for a caffeine fix must have been an emergency. I guess he was tired of waiting like the rest of us, so he flipped on the lights and sirens in his SUV, forcing already congested traffic to part like the red sea so that he could wait in another line at Starbucks. How many of you reading this have seen them do the same to avoid waiting at a stop light, or have seen them barreling down the street at speeds that only a NACAR fan would appreciate? Let's face it...this type of behavior is not only unprofessional, but it is amateur at best. So it comes as not surprise that that someone lacking the proper training and certifications required of beginning intravenous therapy on a patient, would decide to dabble in it.

East Chicago residents deserve better. Perhaps prompt should stick to patient transport and leave the emergencies to professionals who don't abuse their privileges.
